As a movie enthusiast, I’ve recently discovered an extraordinary find – the Paley Center for Media’s colossal Paley Archive, housing over 160,000 radio and television shows, now accessible at the Beverly Hills Public Library. This treasure trove invites you to immerse yourself in year-round programs, delving into the rich history of media and its impact on our culture.
The archive was officially inaugurated on March 20th, marking the occasion with a ceremony that was graced by Maureen Reidy, president and CEO of Paley Center, John Landgraf, chairman of FX and Nat Geo who is also a member of Paley’s board of governors, and Lester Friedman, the mayor of Beverly Hills.
At the Paley Archive, visitors will uncover a lively cultural hub where families, students, researchers, artists, and the creative community can delve into and interact with the dynamic past of media, as stated by Reidy. We’re thrilled to collaborate with our friends at the Beverly Hills Public Library and the City of Beverly Hills, and we greatly value their cooperation and invaluable assistance.
The Beverly Hills Public Library will serve as the Western base for the Paley Archive, which currently resides at Paley’s New York headquarters. This extensive collection encompasses over 160,000 television and radio broadcasts and commercials from over a century of media history, covering genres such as comedy, drama, entertainment, sports, news, public affairs, documentary, performing arts, reality shows, animation, and children’s and family programming. The Paley Center explains that every program added to the Archive is chosen for its artistic, cultural, and historical importance, with contributions from over 70 different countries.
Through this collaboration, the community now has the opportunity to explore over 160,000 pieces from the Paley Archive, spanning over a hundred years of television and radio history,” Friedman explained.
The library’s upcoming community events will feature a West Coast version of the “Chat with the Curator” series, which includes in-depth discussions led by Paley staff and other professionals about programming related to anniversaries and current events. Some of the planned topics include celebrating Stevie Wonder’s 75th birthday and examining the enduring impact of legendary CBS News journalist Edward R. Murrow.
On weekends, we have ‘Storytime to Screentime’, a special event for families with kids. Here, a presenter reads a beloved children’s story in a warm, comfortable environment. Afterward, they watch the TV version of the tale and participate in an arts and crafts activity.”
Or, more casually:
“On weekends, we have ‘Storytime to Screentime’. Kids can listen to a story being read, watch it on TV, and even make some cool stuff during the arts and crafts session. It’s all about fun for the family!
The Paley Center for Media opened its West Coast branch in Beverly Hills in 1996.
