‘Paddington in Peru’ Features a Cheeky Cameo From a Franchise Favorite

As a cinephile who has watched countless films and witnessed the ebb and flow of Hollywood careers, I must say that Hugh Grant’s return as Phoenix Buchanan in “Paddington in Peru” is a delightful surprise, reminiscent of the unexpected comeback of Jack Lemmon in “The Odd Couple II.

⚠️ Attention: This discussion includes spoilers for the upcoming movie “Paddington in Peru,” set to hit U.K. cinemas this coming Friday, and U.S. theaters on January 17th.

In an exciting turn of events, a cherished character from “Paddington 2” is making a return in the upcoming third movie of the series, once again craving a piece of the iconic marmalade sandwich.

In November, I’m eagerly awaiting my trip to the cinema for ‘Paddington in Peru’, set to premiere in the U.K. on the 8th (still waiting for its U.S. release on January 17). This time around, our beloved bear returns to his native land alongside the Brown family, embarking on an exhilarating quest that brings them face-to-face with Olivia Colman’s cunning guitar-strumming nun, Antonio Banderas’ enigmatic sea captain, and the search for Aunt Lucy. However, just as the movie wraps up in Peru, things take a surprising turn when the credits roll back in London, and none other than the charmingly villainous Hugh Grant reappears on screen as Phoenix Buchanan, the adored antagonist and struggling actor, who we last saw belting out a dazzling, high-kicking musical number from behind bars.

It’s just a short scene in “Paddington in Peru,” but it shows Buchanan still incarcerated and talking to group of visiting bears (relatives of Paddington) about the possibility of putting on a jailhouse performance of “Goldilocks.” EbMaster hears that Grant was so keen to get involved that he actually wrote most of the lines of the sketch himself.

Absolutely, Grant was nominated for a BAFTA award for “Paddington 2,” a performance that wasn’t just well-received but seemed to spark a resurgence in his career. After this, he took on a diverse array of roles, many of which garnered praise, such as “A Very English Scandal,” “The Undoing,” “The Gentleman,” “Wonka,” and most recently, a critically acclaimed foray into horror with “Heretic.” It’s possible that he felt he had a debt to repay to the bear?

Regardless of Grant’s reason for putting on Buchanan’s striped prison outfit again, judging by the initial public showing of “Paddington in Peru,” his comeback is likely to bring about roaring laughter and enthusiastic applause (provided they remember the second one). Now we’ll find out if Colman can be convinced to come back for number four.
