‘Paddington in Peru’ Earns Biggest U.K. Opening for British Film Since ‘No Time to Die’

As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for heartwarming family films and a particular fondness for the Paddington Bear series, I must say that the success of “Paddington in Peru” has left me absolutely smitten! It’s not every day that you witness a CGI bear stealing the show with his marmalade sandwiches and box office records.

In the United Kingdom, “Paddington in Peru” has charmed viewers, securing an unprecedented debut weekend at the movie theater with top box office earnings.

As a devoted fan of the enchanting Paddington Bear series, I couldn’t help but be thrilled by the third installment, which demonstrated that the seven-year gap since the second movie was more than worth the wait. In fact, it turned out to be the most successful opening of all three films in the franchise so far.

In a remarkable turn of events, the three-day earnings of £9.45 million ($12.4 million) from the British film turned out to be the largest opening of the year and the most significant since “No Time to Die” in 2021. This monumental success not only sets a new benchmark for StudioCanal, but also marks their biggest U.K. debut ever, as this was their costliest film investment to date. It’s impressive indeed, considering we’re talking about a CGI bear with an affinity for marmalade sandwiches!

Compared to its initial release, the first “Paddington” movie made £5.1 million in 2014, but the sequel earned £8.2 million. Together, they grossed over $600 million worldwide, making them the most successful independent family franchise. Although it’s anticipated that “Paddington in Peru” will further boost this success and potentially reach the $1 billion mark, its U.S. release is scheduled for January 17 by Sony Pictures.

In terms of its opening week earnings, the movie “Paddington in Peru” holds a strong position this year. It was released across 732 cinemas, making it the widest release of the year so far. The film trails only behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” (with £17.2m) and “Inside Out 2” (with 11.3m), but has opened with a greater earnings than “The Super Mario Bros Movie” (£8.7m, excluding previews), as well as surpassing the opening weekends of “Incredibles 2” (£9.4m), “Wonka” (£8.9m), “Despicable Me 4” (£8.8m) and “Mary Poppins Returns” (£8.2m).

In the story “Paddington in Peru,” inspired by Michael Bond’s popular children’s book series, our beloved bear character, Paddington, gets a letter from Peru revealing that his cherished Aunt Lucy has mysteriously vanished from her jungle home at the Retired Bears’ sanctuary. The Brown family joins him on this adventure as they embark upon an unforeseen quest triggered by the mystery, leading them deep into the Amazon rainforest and all the way to the towering mountain peaks of Peru.

In addition to Ben Whishaw providing the voice for Paddington, the original cast members like Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin return. Furthermore, Olivia Colman, Emily Mortimer, Carla Tous, and Antonio Banderas are joining the cast for this upcoming release.
