‘Paddington in Peru’ Dominates U.K., Ireland Box Office as ‘Gladiator II’ Looms

As a long-time movie enthusiast with a penchant for British cinema, I must say that the success of “Paddington in Peru” is nothing short of delightful! It’s heartening to see homegrown talent continue to shine on a global stage. The impressive box office numbers just confirm what we’ve all suspected – Paddington bears are truly beloved around the world!


In the UK and Ireland, the third movie from Studiocanal featuring Paddington titled “Paddington in Peru,” grossed an impressive £9.6 million ($12.3 million) during its debut weekend, according to data from Comscore.

In 2023, the movie “Paddington in Peru” garnered the largest debut for a British-made film this year, marking the largest debut in its franchise within that region, and it also became StudioCanal’s most successful UK opening.

In the second spot during its debut, Warner Bros.’ “Red One” earned a steady £2.4 million. Meanwhile, Entertainment Film Distributors’ spooky horror movie, “Heretic,” maintained its strength in its second week, collecting an additional £1 million, raising its total to £3.8 million. Sony Pictures’ “Venom: The Last Dance” held strong in its third week, attracting £965,297 more viewers, pushing its accumulated earnings over £10.9 million.

In the fourth week, Universal’s “The Wild Robot” demonstrated its universal family charm, earning £665,209 and boosting its total to an impressive £12.7 million. Meanwhile, “Small Things Like These,” a potential award-winning film from Lionsgate U.K., maintained its strength in its second week with £660,028, accumulating a total of £2.1 million so far.

In its fourth week, “Smile 2,” the horror sequel from Paramount, continued to hold strong, earning £310,741 and pushing its total to £6 million. In its second week, “Blitz,” produced by Apple Original Films, brought in £245,688, adding to its current total of £430,118. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Anora” accumulated another £240,719, reaching a total of just over £1 million. Lastly, Universal’s latest release, “Piece By Piece,” debuted with £186,978 and entered the top 10.

By the end of the week, everyone’s attention will be focused on “Gladiator II,” directed by Ridley Scott, featuring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington. This highly-anticipated film is set to premiere at over 300 cinemas, courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

Previously, on Wednesday, Cosmic Cat will premiere the BFI Flare documentary titled “India’s 1st Best Trans Model Agency”. On Thursday, audiences can look forward to the live concert film “Shawn Mendes: For Friends & Family Only”, presented by Trafalgar Releasing. Additionally, Yash Raj Films is set to release the action-packed Tamil-language Indian movie “Kanguva”, starring Suriya.

This coming Friday, Disney will debut the music documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late” alongside another film in the genre, “Hyper: The Stevie Hyper D Story,” produced by Dartmouth Films. From Modern Films comes the Sundance-winning documentary “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” which explores music and politics.

Netflix will have a restricted cinema debut for the movie “Joy,” featuring Thomasin McKenzie, James Norton, and Bill Nighy. On the other hand, Vertigo has kicked off the holiday season ahead of schedule by premiering “Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point.

This coming week will feature new releases such as “The Sabarmati Report” from Zee Studios International, “Mura” from Yash Raj Films, and “Matka” by Dreamz Entertainment. Bakrania Media is set to re-release the critically acclaimed horror film “Tumbbad,” which previously screened at Venice.

Trinity CineAsia plans to debut Anselm Chan’s Hong Kong drama titled “The Last Dance,” a film that was previously screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
