I’m thrilled to share that Netflix has formally unveiled “My Sad Dead” (“Mis muertos tristes”), an upcoming four-part horror drama miniseries. As a fan, it’s exciting to know this project is in the capable hands of renowned Chilean director Pablo Larraín, who will lead the production. His Chilean label Fabula and Argentina’s K&S Films, known for producing the streaming giant’s recent global phenomenon “The Eternaut,” are co-producing this chilling series.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement as I prepare to embark on an exciting cinematic journey! The upcoming series, adapted from the captivating short story penned by Mariana Enríquez, is scheduled to commence filming at the end of June. The outdoor scenes will be captured in Buenos Aires, while Santiago, Chile will serve as our backdrop for the indoor shots. I can hardly wait to see this tale come to life on the big screen!
My Sad Dead” is a chilling tale that combines psychological horror and supernatural elements, drawing heavily on societal wounds. It doesn’t just stem from Enríquez’s short story of the same name, but also pulls in characters and themes from her other works such as “Julie”, “A Sunny Place for Shady People” and “Back When We Talked to the Dead.” The screenplay was co-written by Enríquez, Guillermo Calderón (known for “Neruda” and “The Club”), Anastasia Ayazi and Larraín.
In ‘My Sad Dead,’ a distinguished Argentine ensemble takes center stage, spearheaded by Mercedes Morán (from ‘Neruda’ and ‘The Swamp’), Dolores Fonzi (‘Paulina’ and ‘Truman’), and Alejandra Flechner (‘Argentina 1985’ and ‘The Last Brother’). They are accompanied by Carlos Portaluppi, Germán de Silva, Luz Jiménez, and debutante Carolina Sánchez Álvarez.
Ema, a 60-year-old physician, possesses the ability to perceive and converse with the deceased, whom she refers to as ‘presences.’ She has spent her life keeping this talent at bay to shield herself from others’ pain. However, when her troubled niece Julie, who similarly communicates with the dead but in a more intense and sensual manner, shows up at her doorstep, Ema is compelled to engage. Initially planned as a family gathering, events take a dark turn, causing a disturbance that impacts the balance between the realms of the living and the dead. The lines between life, death, and desire become increasingly blurred, prompting Ema to confront her past, her daughter, and the spirits she’s always managed to keep at bay.
About the forthcoming adaptation, Larraín commented: “Mariana’s writing is strikingly visual, consistently brilliant yet daring. It’s a subtly chilling tale set in everyday life that I believe will spark and continue to inspire numerous film and TV adaptations. I am thankful to Netflix for providing us with the chance to collaborate with this talented group of individuals who are certain to give their all to create an exceptional miniseries.
Enríquez enthusiastically shared her delight, “I’m absolutely thrilled that Pablo Larraín and Fabula are allowing me to transform my tales into a unified miniseries. I find adaptations fascinating; I see them as interpretations, and I have high hopes for this interpretation of ‘My Sad Dead.’ The entire experience has been serene and considerate, and the fact that it will be streamed on a platform with Netflix’s global reach is awe-inspiring, not to mention the pride in creating locally within Latin America.
Francisco Ramos, Vice President of Netflix’s Latin American Content, underscored their dedication to local storytelling: “Our increasing investment in outstanding Argentine tales gains significance with the involvement of one of Latin America’s prominent directors for this upcoming project. Collaborating with Pablo Larraín to adapt Mariana Enríquez’s stories for the screen felt like a logical choice.
The film titled ‘My Sad Dead’ is overseen by directors Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, and Ángela Poblete. Álvaro Cabello and Cristián Donoso serve as executive producers. Key roles in the production team include Sergio Armstrong for cinematography, Rodrigo Bazaes for production design, Waldo Salgado as assistant director, and Alejandro Wise as the production manager.
