Paapa Essiedu, Keeley Hawes to Lead Channel 4 Drama ‘Falling’ from ‘Adolescence’ Writer Jack Thorne

Paapa Essiedu is poised to put on the ominous cloak of Severus Snape in HBO’s “Harry Potter” adaptation; however, before that, he is set to immerse himself in the ecclesiastical attire associated with the clergy.

In the upcoming Channel 4 drama “Falling,” the actor known for his roles in “I May Destroy You” and “Black Mirror” will portray a Catholic priest. Simultaneously, Keeley Hawes, recognized from “Scoop” and “Miss Austen,” will play a devoted nun in the series. This drama is unique as it’s the first love story penned by BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne. The production company, Forge Entertainment, which is part of Banijay U.K., is responsible for bringing this compelling tale to life.

In the play “Falling,” Essiedu’s character, a priest, and Hawes’ character, a nun, are deeply devoted to their religious duties and community service. Romance was not part of the plan for either of them. However, love unexpectedly blossoms between them, leading both characters to grapple with its implications for themselves, their vows, and their spiritual bond with God. The drama is portrayed as a “sharply intelligent, emotionally stirring, modern romantic tale that is as truthful as it is compassionate.

Additionally, the following talented actors will be part of the cast: Rakie Ayola (known from “The Pact” and “Kaos”), Jason Watkins (“Coma” and “The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies”), Niamh Cusack (“The Virtues” and “Heartbeat”), Adrian Scarborough (“Gavin and Stacey” and “The Chelsea Detective”), David Dawson (“My Policeman” and “The Last Kingdom”), Susan Brown (“Mr Bates vs The Post Office” and “It’s A Sin”), Sandra Voe (“Howards End” and “Vera Drake”), as well as newcomers to TV, Holly Rhys and Shayde Sinclair.

Hawes expressed his excitement about playing the character Anna, and he can’t wait to collaborate with the talented Paapa Essiedu to breathe life into Jack Thorne’s captivating scripts,” stated Hawes.

As a movie reviewer, I’d put it like this: “Falling is a captivating tale that showcases Jack Thorne’s exceptional ability to find the extraordinary in everyday life. I’m thrilled about the opportunity to collaborate with Keeley, Peter, and the entire team to breathe life into this fascinating world,” shared Essiedu excitedly.

Thorne expresses: “I never imagined I’d pen a love story, but I am thrilled to be creating one alongside the talented Peter Hoar. We are incredibly fortunate to have convinced the remarkable Keeley Hawes, the exceptionally gifted Paapa Essiedu, and an exceptional group of actors (who are all equally lovely) to join us in this venture with The Forge and Channel 4.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m excited to share that the upcoming production “Falling” is being overseen by executive producers George Ormond, George Faber, and Thorne. The talented Joe Donaldson, known for his work on “Cobra,” “Ripper Street,” and “Peaky Blinders,” will be the producer. Furthermore, the esteemed Peter Hoar, recognized for his work on “It’s A Sin,” “The Last of Us,” and “Umbrella Academy,” will direct this project. “Falling” has been given the green light by Ollie Madden, the director of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama, and Gwawr Lloyd, commissioning editor for drama at Channel 4.

“Falling” will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.
