As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I find Owlcat Games’ decision to become a publisher for independent RPG developers absolutely thrilling! Their track record speaks for itself – Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Pathfinder: Kingmaker are all games that have left lasting impressions on the gaming community.
Owlcat Games, known for creating the Pathfinder series and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, announced their intention to transition into a publishing company. They have teamed up with various external development studios to release their future projects; the initial pair of games set to debut under this initiative are role-playing games – Rue Valley and Shadow of the Road.
The game titled “Rue Valley,” showcased on Steam, is being worked on by Emotion Spark Studio as we speak. It was initially revealed last December and offers an immersive narrative role-playing experience where you find yourself stuck in a time loop as the protagonist. By making various choices during your adventure, you can attempt to escape this loop and witness the repercussions of your decisions. Notably, “Rue Valley” includes a Character Development System, which was discussed at length in a previous blog post by the game’s creators.

The game titled “Shadow of the Road,” being developed by Another Angle Games on Steam, is a turn-based strategy RPG that takes place in an alternate feudal Japan with yokai and steampunk technology. A teaser for this RPG was initially unveiled four years ago, and the YouTube channel of Another Angle Games has since been providing sneak peeks into various systems they’re experimenting with during development. In their latest update, Another Angle Games revealed Shadow of the Road’s stealth system and a revamped combat sequence timing.
Owlcat Games mentioned that “both titles are still in the early stages of development.”
Known for creating hit role-playing games like Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Owlcat Games has declared its aspiration to transition into a publishing company. In addition to continuing their own game development projects, Owlcat now aims to support indie teams worldwide in launching their RPGs and story-driven games to the public. By providing services, funding, and professional guidance, Owlcat intends to help these new partners develop unique role-playing experiences for players.
“Andrey Tsvetkov, Head of Publishing at Owlcat Games, expressed his preference for collaborating with teams who, like us, are deeply invested in crafting immersive tales using narrative-centric games. While these projects may not strictly adhere to the RPG category, they will undoubtedly emphasize story development, character creation, and world-building. Having successfully realized our own dream game, we now possess the knowledge and resources to help other teams bring their ideal games to life as well.”
Following the examination of over fifty ventures, Owlcat has sealed agreements with two gifted development studios: Emotion Spark Studio, hailing from Serbia, and Another Angle Games, situated in Poland.
Emotion Spark Studio is creating an RPG named Rue Valley. This game tells the story of a man who finds himself inexplicably stuck in a time loop during a therapy session. As he grapples with emotional struggles, the protagonist must emerge from his darkest moments and explore the strange phenomenon to reveal its mysterious past.
In an alternative take on feudal Japan, Another Angle Games is designing an isometric role-playing game titled “Shadow of the Road.” This captivating narrative delves into themes of samurai ethos, loyalty, and honor, while also incorporating a strategically complex, turn-based battle system. The game world is populated with magical creatures known as yokai and advanced steampunk machinery, promising an exhilarating blend of fantasy and technology.
The two projects are currently under early development, and further details will be unveiled towards the end of this month at gamescom.
Owlcat Games now owns META Publishing, the publishing label that helped release Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous on PC and console marketplaces in 2021. META Publishing prioritizes games centered around gameplay and includes cooperative multiplayer elements as part of their unique strategy.
META Publishing boasts an impressive collection of released games such as Biped, Spirit of the Island, Train Valley, Train Valley 2, and more. Later this month at gamescom, some exciting new titles from META’s portfolio will be unveiled, including a sequel to the popular puzzle-action-adventure game, Biped 2, and Nested Lands, a fresh creation from Brazilian studio 1M Bits Horde, known for Spirit of the Island.
