As a dedicated Overwatch player since its launch back in 2016, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia with the introduction of Overwatch Classic. It’s like stepping into a time machine and returning to my gaming roots. The unrestricted hero roster, the balanced chaos of 6v6 matches, and the thrill of having unlimited Mercy resurrections – it all brings back such fond memories.

The community has warmly embraced Overwatch Classic, yet there’s ongoing discussion about whether it should become a permanent feature in OW2, or if it’s merely a brief wave of nostalgia that will fade away shortly.

In an unusual twist, multiplayer games often don’t look back at their origins. However, Fortnite did so with Season OG in 2023, and the original Warzone map, Verdansk, will return early next year. Now, Overwatch is following suit by introducing Overwatch Classic.

For a brief period, they’re offering a special mode that mirrors the original game release in 2016. It includes team battles with six players on each side, unrestricted use of characters, and some abilities that might not be perfectly balanced.

Long before the playlist officially debuted on November 12th, there was a chorus of players commending Classics, expressing their enthusiasm and even pleading for it to become a permanent game mode.

Reddit user ‘pluvialHermit’ kindly requested, “Could you extend it beyond three weeks?” expressing gratitude for the return of Classic mode and sharing that they have deeply missed Overwatch 1, along with the maps that have been lost and the gameplay style. They found this to be wonderful!

“But I already know I’ll miss this once those 3 short weeks are up.”

Addressing the elephant in the room: Please don’t limit it to 3 weeks. Make Classic a permanent ranked game mode.

Many other players concurred, some of them stating their intention to quit the game once Overwatch Classic is taken down.

One response expressed their desire for a permanent change, saying, “I really wish this stays, there are so many elements from Overwatch 1 that I miss.” Another commentator hoped for the same permanence, stating, “I hope it does last, I’m only returning to play this mode. When it ends, I plan on uninstalling again. I truly dislike the 5v5 version of Overwatch; it’s not the game I initially fell in love with.

On the contrary, some were not entirely convinced about the longevity of Classic and instead highlighted other games that attempted similar retro events, suggesting potential pitfalls.

One comment suggests that the surge of classic comeback game modes like those in WoW and Fortnite shows they eventually lose their appeal, with the peak period being only a few weeks.

It’s been noted by others that newcomers to Overwatch may find the initial balance issues challenging, especially considering they have spent years playing with role restrictions.

Following five matches, it seems that 95% of the players will be weary due to their primary role being support with Mercy as their only backup, while also being pulled through walls repeatedly by 5 Roadhogs,” was a subsequent comment.

Overwatch Classic will continue until December 2nd, however, Blizzard is keeping an eye on how players react to this mode and has yet to decide about its long-term plans.

Although a permanent mode may not be completely off the table, it seems more probable that we’ll witness its comeback in the future, given that developers have hinted at their intention to explore various historical meta-styles from Overwatch.
