As an experienced gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the dynamic world of Overwatch, I eagerly await the upcoming changes in Overwatch 2. After years of playing and strategizing, it’s refreshing to hear that the developers are aiming for more depth and strategic elements beyond just new heroes and maps.
According to Aaron Keller, Game Director for Overwatch 2, the team aims to introduce additional tactical features beyond simply designing new characters and arenas.
In essence, Overwatch 2 is grappling with its own sense of purpose and exploring which team size format – be it 5v5, 6v6, or something else entirely – would best suit the game. As part of this exploration, it’s conducting a sequence of trials to find the ideal direction.
Excitedly counting down the days until I get my hands on Overwatch 2’s 6v6 format, I tuned into Coach Spilo’s Twitch stream for an exclusive chat with Aaron Keller and Lead Gameplay Designer Alec Dawson. They shared tantalizing insights about the game’s future plans, leaving me eagerly anticipating what’s to come!
According to Keller, the team’s vision for the game is to make it a “serious competitive game.”

He pointed out that we spend considerable effort discussing and contemplating the game, but this doesn’t rule out the possibility of deeper strategy in an Overwatch encounter. In essence, Overwatch often involves quick tactical decisions based on the immediate situation and how your team functions together.
During a game, you may face some significant choices such as deciding which hero to replace. However, apart from team fights, not many choices present themselves throughout the match. We aspire to add more depth to this experience. Our goal is to make players believe that each match has its own narrative and offers various exciting elements to anticipate throughout a game.
While conversing with TopMob recently, Keller hinted at the need for a deeper strategy without going into specifics. He used a hero pick-ban system as an illustration of how such strategic depth could be achieved within their team dynamics.
Keller also noted that just adding new maps and heroes won’t necessarily accomplish those goals.
A simple approach to enhancing Overwatch may not be limited to introducing fresh heroes, maps, or modes. Adding a new hero can provide temporary excitement, perhaps lasting a couple of weeks to two months, but it won’t fundamentally alter the essence of Overwatch. Even when we release a new hero, you might discover a new favorite or main character, but the core experience of Overwatch and your perception of any given match will remain largely unchanged. I believe we should delve deeper into crafting a more substantial evolution for the game as a whole.
According to the Game Director, historically, the team has been overly cautious with system changes and updates, but moving forward, players can anticipate more substantial modifications.
