As a seasoned Overwatch player since its inception back in 2016, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia with Blizzard announcing Overwatch Classic. It feels like a blast from the past, taking me back to the days when Hanzo’s Scatter Arrows could wreak havoc on unsuspecting opponents and Mercy’s Resurrect Ultimate was a game-changer.
Overwatch 2 will temporarily feature Overwatch Classic, a special mode that recreates the original game from its 2016 release, which was first launched by Blizzard Entertainment.
It’s been nearly nine years now since Overwatch initially debuted, and since then, it has experienced quite a few transformations. For instance, we saw the implementation of role limits, as well as the shift to a 5v5 setup with the release of its sequel. In essence, Overwatch 1.0 bears little resemblance to the game it is today.
Currently, Overwatch Classic is transporting gamers right back to 2016, allowing them to re-experience the original game with all its nostalgic mayhem and bedlam.
Starting up on Tuesday, 11th November, 2024, I’m thrilled to dive into the Arcade mode with its initial lineup of 21 heroes! These heroes are categorized into four distinct groups: Tanks, Offense, Defense, and Support. Each group offers unique abilities that will undoubtedly enhance my gaming experience!
All of them will arrive equipped with their initial toolkits and skills, prior to any adjustments for balance. This means that Mercy can use her ultimate, Resurrect, to revive her whole team, and Hanzo will possess his Scatter Arrows.
As a nostalgic gamer, diving into Overwatch Classic feels like stepping back in time. It’s a throwback to the old days with its 6v6 format, and there are no more restrictions on heroes or roles. So, if you fancy fielding an entire team of Winstons, or any other character for that matter, go ahead! Let the good old times roll!
Even though this version comes as the most similar to the original Overwatch since its replacement in 2022, it does lack certain elements. For instance, the design will continue with the revised user interface found in contemporary Overwatch, while the return of loot boxes remains uncertain.
In Overwatch 2, the maps might look a bit different from what you’re used to. Instead of restoring the original versions, we’ll be using updated ones for all 12 launch maps. This means that changes made to maps like Route 66 and Numbani will still be in place.
The Overwatch Classic event takes place between November 12 and December 2. However, there’s good news: Lead Gameplay Designer Alec Dawson mentioned during an interview with TopMob that they’re considering various historical moments from the game for potential future exploration if the feedback is favorable.
You don’t need to hold back too long for new content, as Overwatch 2 Season 14 is scheduled to come out in just about a week from now, specifically on December 10.
