In Overwatch 2, chat filters unintentionally prohibit players from discussing the popular esports team, Crazy Raccoon, by blocking the word “raccoon” from being typed.
In a twist that’s taking the gaming world by surprise, Overwatch 2 has extended its swear filters to an unprecedented level, effectively silencing discussions about the winners of the Overwatch Champions Series 2025 Champions Clash.
On May 17th, a conversation snippet taken during an Overwatch 2 game began circulating among the gaming community, as a player unsuccessfully attempted to label their teammates as “raccoons.
Their message implied that my teammates could have been ‘raccoons’, but overall, everyone performed excellently.
Overwatch 2’s swear filter bans “raccoons”
“Apparently raccoons are not allowed?” the confused player asked the OW2 community.
Several commenters have pointed out that the term “raccoons” bears a resemblance to a derogatory term, leading to an unfortunate confusion. However, when attempting to exclude this slur, the system seems to be mistakenly blocking the innocent word “raccoons”.
Additionally, it’s important to note that the name of one of Overwatch 2’s top esports teams, often called Crazy Raccoons, is also not allowed to be used in chat.

Since the beginning of the OWCS, Crazy Raccoon has consistently been among the top two most prominent figures. Often, they emerge victorious in tournaments, but when they don’t, it’s usually because they’re closely matched with their main competitor, Team Falcons.
Participants within the discussion pointed out that although Marvel Rivals’ conversation filter prohibits many terms, it has not included the term ‘Raccoon’, possibly due to the presence of the playable character, Rocket Raccoon.
On previous occasions, Overwatch’s chat filter has stirred up debates. For instance, in the year 2024, a player was suspended from the hero-based game for using seemingly innocuous phrases like “Good Game,” “Yippee,” and “Nice Shot.
When the player sought to overturn a month-long ban, Blizzard firmly stood by their original decision, asserting that their initial investigation was accurate.
It’s uncertain at this point whether Blizzard will adjust their filters to enable players to type “raccoon” or “raccoons”. If they don’t, it seems unlikely that we’ll see any raccoon-like characters joining Winston and Wrecking Ball as animal heroes in the near future.
