Overwatch 2’s Season 14 ‘Phreak’ tank hero discovered in old concept art

As a die-hard Overwatch fan since its early days as Titan, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement at the prospect of a character named Phreak joining our roster! From the early concept art to the recent clues, it seems that Phreak has been right under our noses all this time.

The potential identity of Overwatch 2’s upcoming tank character has been hinted at towards the end of the Season 13 trailer, while dedicated players have discovered possible insights into their persona from early concept sketches.

Information about the tank hero from Season 14 was limited prior to October 9, aside from a placeholder image that was unveiled at BlizzCon 2023.

However, the Season 13 trailer finally gave us some answers while raising even more questions.

Towards the finale of the preview, an apparently damaged Oasis University came into view, and the camera then focused on a wall that bore the tag ‘PHREAKS’ in graffiti.

A hint about the upcoming Overwatch 2 tank character has been dropped, and it seems to be a character inspired by old concept art from Titan. (Scottish hero) 👀

As the trailer wraps up, a voice with a distinct Scottish lilt remarks, “Seems we’re on the brink of a game-changing event,” speaking from my gamer perspective.

It turned out that Phreaks or Phreak wasn’t a new character in Overwatch; they had actually been referenced before. In actuality, their initial appearance can be traced back to the early concept art from when Overwatch was initially being developed as a multiplayer online game called Titan.

In the early concept art, you’ll find that the main character’s skills are depicted as cannon, stomp, and attract. However, keep in mind that since this artwork dates back almost a decade, it’s possible that these abilities may not be the final ones, given how much could have evolved over time.

I must admit, as a devoted player, I didn’t realize at first that “Phreaks” is the moniker for this intriguing new faction in our beloved game. It seems so obvious now, yet it was hidden in plain sight all along! Kudos to creator Bro You Wack for pointing this out.

In Season 13’s trailer, it seems highly probable that the upcoming Season 14 protagonist was hinted at. This character might be known as “Phreak” or a member of a group called “The Phreaks,” since their name is visible on a jacket and there’s a “revolution” scene set in the Overwatch map Paris, along with an old hero concept from Titan days!

In the midst of the chaotic Omnic Crisis, during Paris’ turbulent times, I spotted my handle, ‘Phreaks,’ emblazoned on the jacket of a rebellious-looking character in one of the artwork pieces.

He pointed out that the individual was either known as ‘Phreak’ personally or was part of a group referred to as ‘The Phreaks’. This group name was visible on his jacket, and there was a ‘revolution’ scene on the Overwatch map Paris that seemed to be connected to them.

I’m thrilled to share that we don’t have much time left before we delve deeper into the enigma of this upcoming hero! In line with their tradition, ever since introducing Mauga, the developers have given us a sneak peek at new characters ahead of their official release. This not only allows us to get a feel for these newcomers but also assists in balancing and fine-tuning them before they become fully integrated into the game.

As we approach the halfway mark of Season 13, starting from October 15, we might expect to uncover more details or hints about the plot.
