Overwatch 2’s 6v6 Comeback Thrills Fans, But One Glaring Issue Threatens Its Success

6 vs. 6 competitive mode has returned in Overwatch 2, and fans are thrilled, yet there’s a problem that’s preventing it from becoming a grand slam.

When Overwatch 2 debuted, the choice to transition from 6-player-vs-6 matches to 5-player-vs-5 sparked a lot of debate in the gaming community, with many players asking for the original setup to come back. Despite Blizzard providing several reasons for the switch, the passionate discussion among gamers has persisted.

After the mid-season 15 update, the developers have been conducting various tests on secondary game modes, excluding the main ones, to explore the possibility of reintroducing the 6v6 Competitive mode. The most recent test was conducted, which has now brought back 6v6 Competitive in Open Queue.

So far, the new style is well-received by the fans, but there’s a significant issue that’s difficult to overlook.

Overwatch 2 players can’t find Tanks on 6v6

Ever since the return of 6v6 Competitive mode, players have been facing issues finding a second Tank on their team as teammates often prefer playing Damage or Support roles instead. This results in teams that are imbalanced due to having too few Tanks. In Open Queue, there’s a maximum limit of two Tanks, but some teams opt for going with only one Tank or even no Tanks at all, focusing their roster on other positions.

This resulted in numerous messages from gamers advocating for a system called Role Queue. One user named ‘Yonderdead’ commented: “I was excited to give 6v6 another go with this new game mode, but most of my games thus far have been me frantically trying to cover open positions.

“Overwatch has been out for almost a decade and people are still trying to run no tank in comp.”

It’s been noted that the problem with Overwatch isn’t a recent one. When the game primarily used a 6v6 format, it was common for teams to choose imbalanced roles, causing issues in the Open Queue. However, during those times, the Role Queue option was already available.

A different Redditor stated, “It’s clear that we don’t have enough tank players for the 6v6 role queue and they won’t choose tanks in open play either.” This isn’t a new issue; it’s one we faced years ago. Regrettably, the problem remains unsolved.

Various factors could be influencing players’ decisions to steer clear of Tanks. For some, it’s about the excitement of playing multiple Damage or Support characters, while others find the responsibility of being the center of attention on the team overwhelming.

Although there were issues associated with its return, for the most part, the 6v6 format has proven successful. We’ll need to watch and see whether it continues to thrive during Season 16 and beyond.
