Overwatch 2 Season 13 update teases new maps and long-awaited ocean city

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 player with countless hours submerged in the virtual world of Blizzard Entertainment, I am thrilled to my aquatic core by the tantalizing teaser of the upcoming underwater map, Atlantic Arcology. The idea of exploring an underwater city has been a dream since the early days of Overwatch, and I can still recall the concept art for Galapagos that sent a shiver down my spine back then.

In the arrival of Season 13, a few maps for Overwatch 2 have been hinted at, and it seems that players might experience aquatic adventures as a much-anticipated ocean city is introduced.

In simpler terms, the Season 13 of Overwatch 2 started on October 15, introducing a revamped version of Sombra, updates to certain maps, and numerous adjustments to game balances.

On Numbani, they’ve planned some updates, including alterations to the layout, providing players with additional opportunities for seizing the initial objective point.

A subtle modification, not disclosed in the release notes nor mentioned by developers, involves the introduction of two fresh location posters subtly placed within the respawn area. Historically, such teaser posters have hinted at potential future map expansions.

The initial spot is Atlantic Architropolis – a brief map that once surfaced on the transit systems of Midtown and Esperanca.

The term “Atlantic Arcology” is mentioned in the background story of Lifeweaver on the Overwatch site and is described as an autonomous, self-contained city located in the Atlantic Ocean that operates independently from the legal jurisdiction of any Earth-based nation.

The idea of an underwater map has been a popular one among both players and developers. Back when Overwatch was still being designed as Titan, concept art showed a massive underwater map called Galapagos.

Back in 2022, during a thrilling livestream, Game Director Aaron Keller reminisced about the iconic map he’d always found captivating, sharing, “Ever since we first began brainstorming Overwatch, this map has been on our wish list. We’ve always hoped to reintroduce it.” As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t help but feel excited at the prospect of this beloved map returning to the game!

In another post, there’s a depiction of a vast, futuristic city accompanied by a colossal structure reminiscent of a tower. Yet, it remains unclear whether this map encompasses the entire city or if the tower plays a significant role in its design, much like Lijiang Tower does on the Overwatch map, King of the Hill (KOTH).

It’s still uncertain which game types these maps are intended for, but based on previous hints about Overwatch 2 maps, it seems that the revelation of the game modes might not be too far off.
