The initial reveal left me excited, but the subsequent revelation that it required purchasing all levels or a significant time investment to unlock felt like a slap in the face.
In the trailer for Overwatch 2 Season 11, there was an enormous build-up of excitement. It revealed exciting new additions like the Runasapi map, a Transformers collaboration, a Pink Mercy Skin linked to BCRF, and the first Mythic weapon skin. While fans had predicted a moderate cost for the skin, its appearance in the shop left many speechless.
The skin is overpriced, I believe, and that’s why there’s so much controversy in the community regarding the cost of the first mythic skin introduced in Overwatch 2. Let’s examine the reasons behind this uproar.
Overwatch 2 Players Are Calling The Price of the First Mythic Weapon Skin A “Scam”
In the Season 11 trailer for Overwatch 2, we got our first glimpse of a Mythic weapon skin – Reinhardt’s hammer, named “Bound Demon.” The design was reminiscent of Diablo, featuring flames and a skull. During this reveal, there seemed to be a hint of a new weapon inspection feature, as Reinhardt rotated the hammer in his hands in the trailer.
Despite initial enthusiasm, the joy soon gave way to disillusionment. The much-anticipated “weapon inspect” function turned out to be merely an ornamental move, accessible only through pricier upgrades. These enhancements are divided into four stages: Level 1 represents the basic weapon, Level 2 introduces responsiveness, Level 3 adds the flourish, and Level 4 offers elaborate kill effects, rendering players who fall victim to the hammer seemingly evaporating in a burst of flame.
Fans are finding the steep price of Overwatch 2’s weapon skins displeasing. The total fee, which is around USD 80 without Prisms from the Premium Battle Pass, has sparked outrage among players online. Some have even called it a “scam.” On Reddit, one player lamented the $80 spent on visual enhancements or the $70 needed just to unlock a single flourish.

You don’t need to purchase every weapon level in its entirety to get the weapon skin. Instead, completing the Premium Battle Pass will grant you enough Mythic Prisms for the skin. The Battle Pass is priced around $10, but amassing the total 80 Prisms for the complete skin takes a substantial amount of time investment.
I, along with many other players, have grown disappointed with the current pricing of skins in the game. The value of these cosmetic items feels questionable to us, given the gameplay dynamics that encourage frequent role swapping between tanks, DPS, and support classes. As fans, we’re eagerly hoping for Blizzard to reconsider the costs or provide adjustments. Until then, our satisfaction remains elusive.
