In a recent update, Overwatch 2 reintroduced loot boxes, and although players are pleased to see their return, they’ve identified a potential problem associated with them.
Following a period that felt quite barren, Overwatch 2 has surprisingly gained some traction again – a development eagerly anticipated by many, particularly following the launch of its rival game, Marvel Rivals.
There are numerous compelling factors behind this comeback as well. The introduction of new features has given the game a refreshing feel, and let’s not forget about the variety of free cosmetics available to players, such as the Legendary Rainy Day Mercy skin and those from Twitch Drops.
Initially, there are loot boxes that provide cosmetic items for no charge, albeit randomly. This feature has been highly demanded and its reintroduction is undoubtedly appreciated by gamers. However, there seems to be a concern among players regarding these loot boxes in their revised version.
Opening Overwatch 2 loot boxes don’t feel the same, according to players
Not long after the reintroduction of loot boxes, players swiftly observed that the animation changed when opening them.
As a gamer, I hopped into a Reddit discussion labeled “My sole gripe about loot boxes making a comeback.” One participant shared their concern: “They trim down the animation so all we see are pedestals spinning up, but we miss out on the satisfying rhythm of thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk as they settle back down.

In Overwatch 1, upon opening a loot box, the items appear to leap out and then land, creating an effect that some users find pleasing due to the distinct sound they make as they hit the ground individually.
In Overwatch 2, the loot box functionality remains unchanged; however, instead of showing the usual animation and sound effect, the screen fades to black, and the acquired items are instantly shown in a tab located on the left side of the screen.

One individual who expressed similar feelings said: “I received an extraordinary first box, but missing out on the entire animation made me feel flatter than if I had only gotten a blue item and three whites.
Another user expressed their feelings too: “Upon reopening one, I was truly disheartened. I fondly remember accelerating the animation and watching them all race down swiftly, only to later appreciate every detail.
In essence, the key aspect when uncovering a mystery box is that there’s always a bit of wishful thinking involved,” they added.
Generally speaking, although numerous gamers are content with the reintroduction of loot boxes, they expressed a desire for the developers to restore the previous animation as well.
