As a veteran gamer with countless hours spent in the original Overwatch, the news about the return of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 has me absolutely thrilled! The switch to 5v5 was a bit of a letdown for many of us who appreciated the team-oriented structure. I can’t wait to jump back into the fray and experiment with these new modes, especially the ‘Min 1, Max 3’ variation.
In simpler terms, Overwatch 2 will reintroduce the classic 6-player vs 6-player format using some novel test modes, allowing developers to determine the direction for the game’s future.
Upon the launch of Overwatch 2, the hero shooter game underwent a change in team composition, transitioning from 6 versus 6 to 5 versus 5, featuring only one tank per team. This shift sparked considerable backlash among players who fondly recalled the collaborative dynamics that characterized the original version’s team setup.
Following the launch of Season 14, developers are planning to introduce several experimental game modes to explore the potential of a 6v6 setup for Overwatch 2.
On October 24th, developers disclosed that the initial test, scheduled a week after Season 14’s launch, has been given the code name ‘Min 1, Max 3.’ In simpler terms, they announced that the first trial will be referred to as ‘Minimum 1, Maximum 3.’
In this new game format, reminiscent of an open queue system, each team must ensure they have at least one Tank, Damage Per Second (DPS), or Support character. But remember, no team can field more than three players in a single role. Feel free to switch roles as you wish, but be mindful not to exceed the role limit.
As a gamer, I’ve got my hands on some unique team setup possibilities with various character combinations in Overwatch 2. The developers have hinted at these being unprecedented configurations we haven’t witnessed before!
In addition to trying out a system that bridges the gap between Role Queue and Free-for-All, this approach will allow us to observe how Overwatch 2 characters, skills, and changes function within a 6-versus-6 setup. Once we’ve gathered data from these tests, we can explore other testing environments.
In the middle of Season 14, you’ll encounter a test that follows the traditional 2-2-2 format for team composition, yet it will showcase certain gameplay aspects from Overwatch 2, including reduced crowd control effects.
In the unranked mode, each gameplay style (mode) will come equipped with its distinct set of cards. Additionally, these modes will showcase individual adjustments in balance, like toning down tank characters since they were significantly overpowered in the subsequent version.
New 5v5 modes coming in Season 13
The developers are keen on reintroducing the 6v6 format, but they’re not turning their backs on 5v5. In fact, they’ve hinted that it will also see some experimental gameplay variations.
In the new setup, referred to as “Limit 2”, teams can field two tanks; however, their health will be decreased compared to the usual level.
In the middle of Season 13’s update, developers will introduce a mode called ‘Kingmaker.’ This new mode resembles “Limit 2” in that only two roles can be filled at maximum, but there’s a unique element: if a player is playing as the solitary tank, support, or damage dealer, they will receive an extra boost to their power.
Additionally, the developers propose that based on the results of these tests, Overwatch 2 might feature both 6 vs 6 and 5 vs 5 game modes coexisting in the future.
Could Overwatch 2 feature both 5v5 and 6v6 game modes continuously? Previously, I might have answered in the negative. However, as we’ve been talking about shaping Overwatch 2 to suit our players’ preferences, it’s become clear that they may want multiple experiences. This is definitely something we would need to think about when planning for the future.
In a short while, we’ll observe how well these gameplay styles are received, but those eagerly anticipating a comeback of 6v6 can rejoice as their wish is about to come true.
