Overwatch 2 Fans Defend Developers Facing Targeted Harassment Over Season 12 Mythic Skin Choices

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 fan, I’ve been riding this rollercoaster of emotions since the release of Season 12. On one hand, I’m thrilled about the new Clash mode and Juno joining the roster. But on the other, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment over the skin choices, particularly with only Reaper receiving the Mythic skin.

As an avid Overwatch 2 fan, I’ve got to say that Season 12 had a mixed reception from our community. The excitement was palpable with the debut of Clash mode, two fresh maps, and the unveiling of Juno, the new support hero. However, there was also a lingering sense of discontent among many of us. You see, while Reaper got a Mythic skin and some choice rare skins, other characters seemed to have been overlooked in this update, which left quite a few players feeling disappointed.

While it’s normal for players to express their worries about game developments, some have gone too far by harassing Blizzard’s team over their character skin decisions. The Overwatch 2 community has stepped in to support the developers in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and promote a more constructive atmosphere.

Overwatch 2 Fans Denounce Targeted Harassment Towards Developers Over Skin Choices

In the gaming world, I found myself scratching my head when Season 12 rolled out with a fresh batch of skins based on Egyptian mythology. To my surprise, Reaper snagged the coveted Mythic skin while heroes like Mercy, D.Va, Doomfist, Ana, and more got their hands on other rare skins. Characters such as Ramattra and Venture, who seemed tailor-made for this theme, were left completely empty-handed. It’s a bit of a mystery to me why the developers made these choices, but hey, that’s gaming for you!

it takes an entire squad to make a mythic and even though i’m incredibly proud of the work we did on anubis reaper i won’t be posting the dev roster. i’ve seen targeted harassment at our team who have already posted and i won’t be encouraging more of that 🫶

In response to the growing concern, Overwatch 2’s Game Director, Aaron Keller, addressed the matter, disclosing that character Venture would receive a new skin, though not before late 2024 or early 2025 at the soonest. This revelation appears to have been the tipping point for many fans, who started expressing their dissatisfaction more vehemently, channeling their discontent towards the developers.

In response to recent events on social media, Overwatch Mythic Producer Cappugccino expressed, “Creating a Mythic level character requires a dedicated team, and while I’m extremely proud of our work on the Anubis Reaper, I won’t be disclosing the development roster. I’ve noticed some members of our team have faced targeted harassment after sharing this information, so I prefer not to contribute to such behavior.”

Overwatch 2 Fans Defend Developers Facing Targeted Harassment Over Season 12 Mythic Skin Choices

Following this, players of Overwatch 2 on Reddit started pointing fingers at those instigating the targeted abuse, encouraging the community to distance themselves from such actions. One user commented, “Sometimes it’s important to remember there are real people working on this game, not a massive corporation like EA or 2K with their annual sports releases. They’re a smaller team with limited resources… Everyone should just calm down. The developers have made mistakes, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that they’re making an effort.”

A fellow gamer remarked, “It’s crucial to show compassion, given they recently went through layoffs. That’s bound to affect the game’s content flow for some time.” This statement was made in light of Season 12, which introduced a substantial amount of content beyond just character skins, such as Juno’s arrival and new maps. This demonstrates that Blizzard is managing with a leaner team yet continues to produce top-notch content, even if it may not perfectly align with player expectations.

As a dedicated fan of Overwatch 2, I understand that we’re only scratching the surface of Season 12. It’s my hope that with time, the community will find its footing and we can navigate past these challenging circumstances. Both the Overwatch 2 community and developers have compelling perspectives, but let’s strive for a more amicable and balanced dialogue to address our concerns. This way, we can collaborate effectively to make Overwatch the exceptional game it has the potential to be.
