As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in the trenches of team-based multiplayer games, I can confidently say that I’ve seen my fair share of toxicity. However, the recent revelation by Overwatch 2’s senior systems designer, Gavin Winter, has shed some interesting light on the matter.
In Overwatch 2, as well as other multiplayer games emphasizing team-based competition, it’s not unusual to encounter harmful player behavior, often referred to as toxicity. This negativity can be spotted across various skill levels in Overwatch 2’s competitive gameplay, but a developer has pointed out that some rankings exhibit this problem more prominently. Here are the specifics.
Developers Reveal Which Ranks in Overwatch 2 Have the Most Toxic and Disruptive Players
In a recent discussion with popular Twitch streamer and Overwatch 2 coach Spilo, the game’s senior systems designer Gavin Winter offered insights into player behavior across ranks, following a recent data analysis. One notable finding was which rank harbors the highest levels of player toxicity.
The kinds of harmful actions noticed among players varied from abandoning games or being away without notice (AFK) to intentionally lose matches, as well as repeatedly posting harsh remarks during the game’s conversation. As Winter puts it, “A larger number of players who leave, quit games, go AFK – that attitude helps sustain a lower rank. I recall when I was in Silver and Gold divisions, the proportion of matches where someone left, quit, just refused [to play], insulted each other—that was significantly higher in lower ranks.
Interestingly, it appears that lower ranks tend to display the greatest amount of toxic behavior, yet it’s the mid-tier ranks such as Platinum and Diamond that seem to house the most disruptive actions. As Winter pointed out, “It’s in this middle ground where we see more disruptive behavior… I’m sure we can all imagine our own explanations for why this might be the case, but that’s essentially the pattern we observe.
In the mid-tier, the sense of pressure tends to increase because players believe they’re nearly reaching Master rank. This awareness can be beneficial for gamers advancing through these levels in Season 13 and beyond, allowing them to psychologically prepare – and maybe, serving as a prompt to approach future matches with calmness and optimism when they enter Overwatch 2 once more.
