In the realm of Overwatch 2, I’m thrilled to find out that my favorite Damage Per Second (DPS) characters are getting some major boosts during Season 17. These enhancements are designed to help us DPS heroes hold our own against our tanky and supportive counterparts!
In simple terms, Overwatch 2’s Season 17 begins on June 24th, and when it does, developers will introduce a series of enhancements for characters worldwide in an upcoming update.
In a recent blog entry, ex-Overwatch professional-turned-developer, Scott ‘Custa’ Kennedy, shared insights on the strategies the team is considering for tweaking specific characters and how they might be impacted by ban statistics for these heroes.
Specifically, the DPS role is undergoing significant changes that are expected to drastically alter the dynamics of the gameplay.

Based on Kennedy’s statement, the “defensive hero role” where harming adversaries reduces their healing will see an increase in effectiveness during the upcoming update.
Moving into Season 17, a significant change involves raising the decrease in role passive healing from 25% to 30%. This modification is intended to make damage dealers more effective against the high volume of healing provided by support heroes,” he clarified.
Moreover, the duration of global health regen, where health automatically restores after a specified period without damage infliction, will be extended from 5 seconds to 6 seconds.
Combining these two alterations results in heroes becoming much more vulnerable to elimination, especially when they are being targeted by high damage-dealing characters. This adjustment significantly increases the importance and effectiveness of the DPS role.
Besides this, it was additionally disclosed that on a personal scale, Bastion will undergo enhancements aimed at boosting his survivability.
Rather than boosting his armor or health, developers are shrinking him by 10%. Initially, they aimed for a 15% reduction in size, but found that too small made the Omnic seem overly adorable.

He pointed out that the game offers numerous methods to adjust and fine-tune it for each character, demonstrating its adaptability.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to hear that the developers are actively addressing the frequent banning of Sombra in matches. They’re currently brainstorming another rework for her, ensuring she’s well-balanced when Season 17 rolls around. The conversations are ongoing, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for a more dynamic and enjoyable Sombra experience!
Her situation is intricate and won’t be easily resolved, but rest assured, the balance team is keeping a close eye on her.
As a devoted admirer, I’m eagerly waiting to witness how the developers tweak this character’s equipment once more. However, I must caution you that we probably won’t see it happen right away, as reworking characters often demands considerable time, especially when fresh abilities or visual effects are involved in the process.
In the upcoming Season 17, we’re excited to roll out map voting – a highly anticipated addition that empowers players by giving them the choice over which map and game mode they battle on.
