As a long-time Overwatch fanatic who’s been through the highs and lows of this captivating game, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia with the announcement of the Overwatch 2 Classic Event. The return to the roots of our beloved game is like revisiting an old friend from days gone by. The excitement that comes with the classic 6v6 format, original abilities, and maps feels almost too good to be true.
Recently, there’s been a lot of anticipation surrounding Overwatch 2, as the creators have unveiled plans for upcoming 6v6 trials, along with other gameplay modes. This move is aimed at addressing the worries of fans regarding balance adjustments from Overwatch 1 to Overwatch 2.
In an exciting development, Blizzard is delving deeper into the past with their introduction of a Classic Event. This event sees the game going back to its origins, reintroducing 6v6 combat, original abilities, strategic metas, character role selection, and classic maps. Let’s delve into the specifics of this event and understand why it’s generating enthusiasm among both seasoned and novice Overwatch players.
Overwatch 2 Classic Event: Returning Hero Abilities, Maps, and More
According to the recent blog post about the Classic Event in Overwatch 2, this special event, which is only available for a short time, takes the game back to its origins, much like Fortnite’s “Season OG” event. Beginning today, November 12, and lasting until December 2, players have the opportunity to revisit nostalgic moments in Overwatch 2 through a series of new limited-time events. These events will showcase the original heroes, abilities, maps, and classic 6v6 gameplay.
At the heart of this occasion lies the thrilling comeback of Overwatch’s original team, each sporting their classic skill sets once again. Iconic traits such as Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow, Bastion’s initial Ultimate Cannon, Mercy’s Mass Resurrect, and Mei’s freezing primary fire have made a return to delight fans.
Certain heroes, like D.Va and Junkrat, may absorb damage once more from their skills. Additionally, Torbjorn’s upgradable turrets and armor packages (“Grab your armor!”), as well as Widowmaker’s swiftly recharging shots with extended range damage, return to the action.
In the traditional 6 versus 6 setup, these characters and skills can be utilized, giving players flexibility to choose any number or type of roles without initial restrictions. Nevertheless, it’s worth mentioning that hero limits may be implemented during the event as a future update.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to share that we’ll be revisiting the original 12 Overwatch maps in the launch modes – Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control. However, these aren’t just the old versions; they’ve been updated to match Overwatch 2, with improvements on Dorado, Numbani, Route 66, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar. Blizzard has confirmed that the game timing and platform mechanics will remain consistent with Overwatch 2.
Finally, while this event features a return to 6v6, developers noted it will not be part of the planned 6v6 tests. “Overwatch Classic is designed to be a nostalgic experience, taking heroes, players, and the game back to key moments in its history for a limited time,” developers stated. We look forward to seeing everyone join the chaotic fun of the Overwatch 2 Classic Event!
