As a seasoned Overwatch player with countless hours spent mastering the art of tank play, I can’t help but feel a tad perplexed by the current state of affairs in the 6v6 playtest. After years of feeling overlooked and underappreciated, it seemed as if the tide had finally turned for us tanks with the advent of 6v6. The prospect of having a dedicated partner to cover our flanks was enough to make even the most hardened tank player like myself swoon with anticipation.
As an ardent Overwatch 2 enthusiast, I’ve got to say that the 6v6 playtest has been nothing short of a triumph! However, it seems that the number of tank players is dwindling during this trial phase, leaving quite a few of us in the community scratching our heads and wondering where these mighty warriors have vanished.
6v6 has been grabbing attention in Overwatch lately, outshining Hazard’s release and most of Season 14’s other content. Initial player reactions appeared to be incredibly enthusiastic about 6v6, even from tank players who felt that the mode had once again made tanking an enjoyable role.
In team fights involving five players (5v5), the tank role can be challenging due to the lack of a backup tank, leading to difficulties in compensating for any weaknesses. Moreover, as tanks are the sole representatives of their role, there may be discrepancies between what players expect from them and what they can realistically deliver. Consequently, many members within the community believed that the tank role would become more frequently used during the 6v6 playtest, as it offers an opportunity for a second tank to help balance out the team composition.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case and some Overwatch 2 fans aren’t sure why.
Where have all the good tanks gone?
In Aaron Keller’s viewpoint, long wait times were a key factor leading the team to switch from 6v6 to 5v5 game format. This problem persists, as indicated by Keller’s recent blog post, and could potentially be a challenge for the sustainability of the 6v6 version in the future. Regrettably, some gamers have observed a resurgence of disinterest towards tanks in the 6v6 mode.
One gamer observed that the tank position tends to be a less favored role among players,” he said. “This trend has persisted and will likely continue into the future. Many players might argue that tanking is enjoyable in team fights, but when it comes down to it, they wouldn’t actually choose to play the tank character when they log into the game.
In many team compositions, there’s a recurring role division between the “primary protector” and the “secondary protector,” with the primary one taking most of the damage from the opposing team and creating opportunities. As one gamer put it, “You’re largely dependent on your partner in this setup.
It’s important to mention that waiting times can vary depending on the server you’re using, as certain servers have longer wait times for tank players compared to others, suggesting a higher number of players in the tank role compared to other roles.
Despite any existing wait times in team battles right now, we plan to organize another 6v6 playtest towards the end of next year. In this setup, each player can field a maximum of three characters for each role and a minimum of one character per role. This change aims to address queue time issues by implementing an “open queue” system, where players won’t be required to queue specifically for one particular role.
