For two decades, it’s been officially quiet regarding The Myth series, but unofficially, fans have tirelessly been working on its development. Their efforts have finally come to fruition with the launch of Myth: Twice Born Edition.
This modification essentially offers an updated, enhanced version of the games “Myth: The Fallen Lords”, “Myth II: Soulblighter”, and the “Chimera” expansion for “Myth II”.
- The modification is built upon the foundations of the popular Project Magma (which means you first need to install the latest version of that mod—1.8.5). This ensures full compatibility with modern PCs, including support for high widescreen resolutions. Additionally, the first part of the series now incorporates gameplay and control improvements introduced in the second installment.
- The mod remasters all graphical elements. Long ago, the team responsible for Project Magma released refreshed textures, but it wasn’t an ideal solution, as they didn’t fully match the non-remastered unit sprites. Myth: Twice Born Edition eliminates that issue by refreshing literally every aspect of the graphical presentation.
Thanks to a dedicated fan named John God, who collaborated with both current and past Bungie team members, a complete overhaul of the game was achieved. These professionals shared with him all production records from the initial two games in the series. Over the course of 16 years, this skilled modder meticulously updated every single aspect within these archives.
The time it took to finish this project was significant due to the fact that the resources were initially developed in the 1990s with outdated software applications. To successfully carry out the project, the creator had to devise custom instructions for certain tools and educate himself on antiquated programs that no longer receive support across multiple operating systems. Nonetheless, the effort was well worth it as the end product is exceptional.
To put it simply, this mod is on a level that feels like an official remaster. Frankly, I wasn’t shocked by that, given its original goal. The Twice Born Edition was actually meant to be a commercial release under the Nightdive Studios banner initially. However, just as we were about to launch it, Take-Two Interactive—the rights holders—had a change of heart at the last second. In the end, John God decided to share it with us gamers for free instead, as a mod.
