Outriders 2 Was Canceled After Issues With Publisher Square Enix – Report

Previously this past summer, developer People Can Fly experienced job cuts and the shelving of two undisclosed projects. More recently, two sources have suggested that one of the scrapped games could be Outriders 2, the follow-up to the 2021 action-shooter that People Can Fly created for Square Enix.

Initially, The Thumb Wars broke the news about an unfinished game called Project Gemini, which was halted due to disputes between the developers (People Can Fly) and its publishers over assets required for completion. These issues led to a breakdown in communication, preventing the completion of the project. Later on, Insider Gaming confirmed this report.

According to Insider Gaming, Project Gemini is actually referred to as Outriders 2, with Square Enix serving as the publisher. They reported that Outriders 2 was not as close to completion as previously speculated by The Thumb Wars, but there were no clear explanations about the issues between People Can Fly and Square Enix.

Back in December, some developers from an independent game called Project Bifrost were let go by People Can Fly, but work carried on with a reduced team until the most recent round of layoffs. Despite these recent staff cuts, People Can Fly is still actively working on several other projects such as Gears of War: E-Day for Microsoft, Project Delta for Sony, and Project Echo for Krafton.
