Luke Nichols, the creator of Outdoor Boys, is helping out on the MyLifeOutdoors YouTube channel while the host, Steven, takes time off to support his wife through her cancer treatment.
This partnership follows Nichols’ recent decision to take a break from his Outdoor Boys channel. He explained he needed time to address burnout and the effects his channel’s quick popularity was having on his personal life.
Nichols quickly became one of YouTube’s most popular creators, gaining over 12 million subscribers in just 18 months and nearing 15 million before taking a break in May 2025. He explained that the intense attention his rapid growth brought was impacting his family, as he and they were constantly being approached by the public, which had become too much to handle.
He explained he wanted to take a break before things escalated and interfered with his everyday life.
Even though he hadn’t filmed in a while, Nichols came back to create a full-length video for Steven, whose family is dealing with a serious health issue.
In his latest video, called “Camping in Snowstorm With No Tent, No Sleeping Bag,” Steven explains he’s been prioritizing his wife and their four kids. Nichols stepped in to create a video for the channel to help Steven focus on family and “worry about one thing at a time.”
Nichols films an Arctic survival trip for MyLifeOutdoors
The video shows Nichols venturing into the Alaskan wilderness, trying to survive a night in a snowstorm with only the materials he can find. He has no tent or sleeping bag, and works quickly before dark to build a shelter using a fallen birch tree and heating it with a fire.
He collected plenty of firewood, anticipating a long night of seventeen hours. He carefully checked his equipment, just like Steven would, and then cooked a hearty moose stew over the fire.
As he travels, he points out dangers like weak creek ice with water running underneath. He often mentions the typical style of MyLifeOutdoors videos and playfully notes he’s behind schedule, hurrying to complete everything before nightfall.
At the end of the video, Nichols asks viewers to support Steven and his family during a difficult time. He encourages fans to watch and subscribe to their MyLifeOutdoors channel, explaining it would be a big help while Steven prioritizes family matters. The video concludes with Nichols struggling to dig his car out of heavy snow and carefully driving through an unplowed parking lot to get home.
