In early March, it was reported that the founders of Unknown Worlds, Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, along with former CEO Ted Gill, were removed from their positions by their parent company Krafton. This action came before the announcement that Subnautica 2 would be delayed until 2026. The dismissal sparked a public dispute between the former leadership team and Krafton, leading to a lawsuit. Recently, Cleveland has disclosed more details about the lawsuit, which claims that Krafton has been attempting for multiple years to prevent Unknown Worlds from receiving a promised $250 million payout.
The online court case alleges that Krafton deliberately obstructed the early release of Subnautica 2 by failing to complete pre-launch tasks they had previously agreed upon, and it further mentions a provision in the 2021 acquisition agreement which prohibits Krafton from dismissing Unknown Worlds’ management team without just cause.
According to Bloomberg’s initial report, Krafton was contractually obligated to pay $250 million to Unknown Worlds if they reached certain financial milestones by 2025. The lawsuit alleges that Krafton dismissed the management team at Unknown Worlds in order to prevent the release of Subnautica 2 in any form during 2025, which would have made it highly unlikely for the financial targets to be met and thus the $250 million payment to be triggered. The lawsuit further requests that Krafton be compelled to honor the agreed-upon payment and relinquish creative control of Subnautica 2 back to the former leaders at Unknown Worlds.
Previously, Krafton accused Cleveland and other former heads of neglecting their duties regarding Subnautica 2. This week, a leaked development document on Subnautica 2 seems to back up Krafton’s claim that it wasn’t ready for an early-access launch. However, it might be several years before this legal dispute is resolved and a clear winner is determined.
Subnautica 2 is expected to be released on PC and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
