Oscars: Best Original Song — Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran Among Competitive Music Race

As a die-hard movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours in dark cinemas, I eagerly await the grandeur of the Oscars each year. The excitement and anticipation build up as I follow the timeline of events leading to Hollywood’s biggest night.

14th October 2024 Update: The list of contenders for the Best Original Song at the Oscars continues to shine with top-tier musical talent, promising yet another star-studded event. Should the Music Branch choose to recognize these talents, it could lead to a repeat performance by some familiar faces on the Academy Awards stage. Last year saw Billie Eilish and Finneas claim a historic win as the youngest two-time Oscar winners with “What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie.” Will we see more big names gracing the Oscars stage this time around?

Among this year’s most exciting nominees is the Netflix series “Emilia Pérez,” featuring two potential standout songs – “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.” Composed by the gifted duo of Clément Ducol and Camille, with director Jacques Audiard contributing to “El Mal,” there’s also a chance that an additional track, “El Alegato,” performed by Zoe Saldaña, might be submitted for extra consideration. With numerous musical possibilities at hand, “Emilia” could potentially gain more exposure, but will the decision-makers risk splitting votes?

Another exciting possibility in the race is Miley Cyrus, who co-wrote “Beautiful That Way” with Lykke Li and last year’s Oscar-nominated songwriter Andrew Wyatt (of “I’m Just Ken” fame). Fresh off her Grammy wins for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year for her smash hit “Flowers,” Miley might be on track to earn her first Oscar nomination. Could this be her year to conquer Hollywood, too?

As a movie buff and music enthusiast, I must share my thoughts on the enchanting soundtracks that have graced some of the most memorable films this season.

Additionally, we might see some promising competitors emerging from the list of upcoming animated and photorealistic films. For instance, Disney’s “Moana 2” and “Mufasa: The Lion King,” along with DreamWorks’ unexpected blockbuster hit “The Wild Robot,” are all set to captivate audiences and Academy members with their enchanting music.

And let’s not count out Lady Gaga. Despite the underwhelming box office performance and critical reception of her film “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Gaga could still strike an Oscar nom with the film’s title track (if submitted). She’s an Academy Award-winning songwriter, after all, with the song “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” And if anyone can pull off an Oscar nod under tough circumstances, it’s Mother Monster herself!

Look at the first prediction charts below, and return every Thursday for updates.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place this coming Sunday, March 2nd. However, please note that the order of ranking, as well as the movie listings, titles, and distributors, may be subject to alteration before the event.
