Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress — Could Music Superstars Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga Nab Acting Noms?

As a film and entertainment enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the art of acting, I have had the pleasure of witnessing some truly remarkable performances over the years. These women, listed here, have left indelible marks on the silver screen with their talent, dedication, and passion.

Weekly Update (July 19, 2024): Picture an Oscar awards night with Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Grande gracing the stage: the viewership numbers would surely spike. With the cutthroat competition in the category for best supporting actress, this could very well be a possibility.

Jacques Audiard’s musical drama “Emilia Pérez” is generating buzz following the collective win of its four leading actresses at the Cannes Film Festival. Although official submissions have not yet been submitted, the film could potentially secure two acting nominations, which happens approximately one-third of the time in this category. Zoe Saldaña, who has acted in four films that grossed over $2 billion, has demonstrated her industry expertise but hasn’t fully showcased her acting abilities yet. Her role in Netflix’s major awards contender might be her chance to join the ranks of past winners like Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”) and Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).

Selena Gomez, who recently gained her initial Emmy nomination for “Only Murders in the Building,” could also receive a nod in the same category as Saldaña. This would be a groundbreaking achievement, signifying the first instance of two Latinas being nominated in this particular category—an honor that has been delayed far too long.

At the close of this year, Universal Pictures will unveil their much-awaited film adaptation of the hit musical “Wicked.” In this production, Ariana Grande takes on the role of Glinda, the charming and witty Good Witch. This part could showcase Grande’s talents and potentially capture the limelight. Previously brought to life on Broadway by Kristen Chenoweth, who was Tony-nominated alongside Idina Menzel (who won for her performance), Grande might choose to campaign individually from her co-star Cynthia Erivo, an Oscar nominee. Currently, no definitive plans have been announced, but discussions are underway.

Excitement runs deep for Todd Phillips’ upcoming “Joker” sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” as Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix returns to his title role. In this installment, Lady Gaga, with her own Academy Award for best original song (“Shallow” from “A Star is Born”), takes on the seductive antagonist Harley Quinn. Initially believed to contend for a lead actress nod, insiders suggest she may aim for supporting actress instead. The narrative is said to be centered around Arthur Fleck, so Gaga’s significant screen presence could bolster her eligibility if the film delivers and meets audience expectations.

In addition, there are roles for cherished and long-overdue actors as well as newcomers. These include Danielle Deadwyler in “The Piano Lesson,” Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in “Nickel Boys,” Isabella Rossellini in “Conclave,” and Carol Kane in “Between Two Temples.” Previous winners, Tilda Swinton in “The Room Next Door” and Michelle Yeoh in “Wicked,” are also part of this talented lineup.

A sizable number of actors in large ensembles could lead to potential nominees. For instance, “His Three Daughters” (starring Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen), “SNL: 1975” (featuring Rachel Sennott, Ella Hunt, Emily Fairn, and Kim Matula), and “Blitz” (with Saoirse Ronan, Erin Kellyman, Kathy Burke, and Hayley Squires) could see impressive individual performances that capture the attention of voters.

At the 97th Oscars, scheduled for March 2nd on a Sunday, the complete ranking will be revealed. Please note that the movie listings, titles, and distributors mentioned below are preliminary and may be altered before the event.
