Oscar Isaac Confirms Poe Dameron Won’t Return in Rey’s Star Wars Movie

In simpler terms, at a special event for the series “Andor,” Oscar Isaac hinted at the likelihood of him returning to the character Poe Dameron in the next Star Wars project featuring Rey (Daisy Ridley).

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I recently attended a screening of Andor Season 2 in New York. A curious fan boldly asked me about my future plans for the role of Poe Dameron in Rey’s forthcoming movie. With a smile on my face and a hint of sadness in my voice, I responded, “I’m afraid not,” effectively dashing the hopes of Star Wars fans everywhere. The video, shared by @deadboy28 on X, seems to indicate that Poe’s return to the Star Wars universe is not imminent, and it appears that I am at peace with this decision.

As a die-hard Star Wars enthusiast, I was thrilled when the news about Ridley’s return in the upcoming film, tentatively titled “New Jedi Order,” first broke at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Set fifteen years after the events of Episode 9, this film promises to mark Ridley’s comeback following her role in “The Rise of Skywalker” from 2019. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, this highly anticipated project is rumored to be carrying that title. However, despite the initial buzz and even Ridley’s personal appearance at the event, the momentum seems to have slowed down somewhat, with whispers of deeper issues lurking beneath the surface.

Intriguingly, other Star Wars projects like “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” as well as Ryan Gosling’s “Star Wars: Starfighter,” received significant updates at the 2025 Star Wars Celebration, yet my beloved Rey’s film was conspicuously absent from the discussions. This has left me, and many other fans like myself, eagerly waiting for any new developments on the project.

Isaac seems to have answered truthfully, but perhaps the question wasn’t relevant or appropriate. Edgar Allan Poe won’t show up in the New Jedi Order movie if it doesn’t materialize. However, George Nolfi, the writer of The Bourne Ultimatum, has recently joined the project at Lucasfilm, suggesting that it is a significant focus for them. Nevertheless, we don’t have a clear timeline for when production will officially commence.

Initially, Oscar Isaac made his debut in the Star Wars universe in the 2015 film, “The Force Awakens”, where he played the role of Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. Since then, he has been featured in all three films of the Sequel Trilogy, earning him a reputation as a beloved character for his charisma, flying skills, and strong relationships with characters such as John Boyega’s Finn. After the release of “The Rise of Skywalker”, there was no clear indication about Isaac reappearing in Star Wars. However, his character continued to live on. In a 2022 interview, he expressed that he might return as Poe Dameron if the circumstances were suitable.

Poe Should Not Return to Star Wars, Ever

Oscar Isaac’s smile conveys to fans that he has moved forward. The actor has ventured into various roles post-Star Wars, but his association with Disney’s expansive franchises has been somewhat inconsistent. Following his entrance into the MCU through Moon Knight, the series garnered a moderate reaction and has since been in an uncertain state, without any definite signs of when (or even if) his character will reappear, despite rumors about Avengers 5.

It seems Isaac’s character might have moved on from the expansive, intertwined universes Disney is famous for. Poe’s storyline in “The Rise of Skywalker” ended neatly, with him taking up a leadership role and resolving his emotional conflicts with Keri Russell’s Zorii Bliss. Reintroducing him now could risk turning his tale into mere fan service. Similarly, Ridley’s return as Rey isn’t being warmly received by some fans who prefer to explore new characters beyond the Sequel Trilogy. At times, a fitting farewell for a cherished character (and the actor representing them) can be the most suitable choice.
