The line “Somehow, Palpatine returned” from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was filmed during reshoots. Oscar Isaac, the actor who said the line, didn’t realize it would cause so much discussion among fans or become a popular internet joke.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I always felt like Palpatine’s return in The Rise of Skywalker was just…never really explained. They didn’t tell us how he came back, whether it was cloning or some kind of spirit transfer, and just left it mysterious. But honestly, it wasn’t just that that bothered me. The fact that they basically undid his death in Return of the Jedi – which felt so definitive! – and did it so quickly, felt like a sign the whole franchise was a little lost and didn’t quite know where it was going. It felt less like a story and more like they were just trying things out.
A Line That Took on a Life of Its Own
During an interview with Josh Horowitz, the actor was asked about a particularly memorable line from the film: “’Somehow Palpatine returned.’ It’s become a bit of a running joke online, and I was curious if you had any thoughts when you first read it. Did it strike you as a lot to take on?” Horowitz asked.
Isaac confirmed rumors that the scene was filmed later as a reshoot. Fans had already guessed this was done to fix a hole in the story. It seems the filmmakers might have had a better explanation at one point, but decided it was either too complicated or just wasn’t ready.
I was really fascinated by what Isaac said about reshoots. He described them as being like quick, precise operations – you come in and try to fix things when everyone’s already rushing to finish. He specifically mentioned that one line was added right at the very end! It really highlighted how much things were changing and evolving throughout the entire process, which I found pretty interesting.

His remarks suggest the film was constantly changing during production, with different ideas being tested. This might also reflect what happened with the entire sequel trilogy. After Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi took the story in a new direction, J.J. Abrams came back for the final movie. This leaves us wondering: was there ever a clear, consistent plan for the three films?
A Moment That Defines the Film
The Star Wars series continues to be incredibly impactful, and The Rise of Skywalker cost more to make than almost any other film. Because of the rich backstory and passionate fans, every choice the filmmakers made was sure to be carefully examined. So, it was almost inevitable that the explanation for Palpatine’s return – delivered late in the production with reshoots – would be met with criticism.

The problem isn’t that the villain came back to life – it’s that the story never gave a satisfying reason for their return.
Isaac’s comments don’t change how we view that scene, but rather confirm what many viewers already believed: The Rise of Skywalker felt like it was made up as much on the fly as it was carefully planned. While reshoots are common in big movies, they seem to have been particularly important in this case. This moment remains a key part of the film—not because of what it tells us about Palpatine, but because of what it reveals about the chaotic way the story was created.
