Oscar Isaac revealed he almost starred in The Bourne Legacy before Jeremy Renner got the part. He said his audition went well and impressed the filmmakers, even though the screen test was challenging.
Oscar Isaac could have led The Bourne Legacy instead of Jeremy Renner
Oscar Isaac has shared that he was a strong contender to play the main character in The Bourne Legacy, but the role eventually went to Jeremy Renner.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, actor Oscar Isaac revealed that director Tony Gilroy was very impressed with his screen test and immediately wanted him for the part. Isaac remembered Gilroy telling him, “You’re my guy. I’m going to really try to make this happen,” which he described as an amazing moment.
Isaac recounted how difficult his screen test was, both physically and practically. He remembered being in the car with his mother in Florida shortly after spending eight hours filming. He’d also injured his foot skateboarding and had to perform scenes wearing a boot. This made it hard to convincingly play the action-oriented role, as he was essentially trying to be a dynamic character while physically limited, and he believes it ultimately hurt his chances.
Even though he made a great impression, Isaac didn’t get the part. He remembered the director calling to say they were going with someone else, explaining that they were worried about casting an actor who hadn’t starred in a big movie before.
Back in 2011, a Deadline report highlighted that Oscar Isaac’s audition for the lead role had made a strong impression on the director and producers. Although Jeremy Renner eventually landed the part, Isaac was later cast in a significant supporting role as “Number 3,” a fellow assassin who had also been brainwashed.
