Oscar Alonso Joins Spain’s Lazona Pictures as Head of Distribution

As a follower of the Spanish film industry, I am thrilled to see that seasoned executive and esteemed sales agent Oscar Alonso has joined Madrid-based Lazona as head of distribution at its domestic distribution arm, Lazona Pictures. With his extensive background in the sector and recognition within both European and international film markets, he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new position.

Experienced global sales representative Oscar Alonso, known and respected in international business circles, has taken on the role of head of distribution at Lazona’s Spanish division, Lazona Pictures, based in Madrid.

Lazona, a well-known figure in Spain’s film industry, played a significant role as a producer in the creation of “Spanish Affair,” which became the highest-earning Spanish movie ever, bringing in €55.2 million ($59.7 million) at cinemas in 2014.

Lazona was responsible for creating “No Rest for the Wicked,” a film by Enrique Urbizu that earned six Spanish Academy awards in 2012, including the best picture award. Furthermore, they produced acclaimed director Manuel Martin Cuenca’s Toronto-winning film “El autor” (2017), as well as popular Spanish TV shows, such as “Gigantes” (2017-18) from Urbizu, for Movistar Plus+.

I used to work at Latido Films, a renowned film sales agency based in Madrid, Spain. I joined the team back in 2005 and initially served as their festivals manager. During my tenure, I also took on sales executive responsibilities when my colleagues were away. In recognition of my contributions, I was promoted to head of acquisitions for Latido in 2019.

He can now bring this wealth of experience to his new position at Lazona.

“Oscar has collaborated with esteemed directors like Carlos Saura, Javier Fesser, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and Juan José Campanella in the past. He also supports emerging directors such as Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, David Pérez Sañudo, and Alauda Ruiz de Azua as they gain international recognition. With Oscar joining Lazona Pictures, we’re excited about the blend of established talent and fresh voices that will resonate with Spanish audiences.”

“Luis Ferron, who recently joined Lazona Pictures to expand its production capabilities, expressed his confidence in a highly accomplished professional with extensive experience and renown in both European and international film industries. Having worked with him for an extended period and acknowledging his abilities, he is the perfect fit to lead Lazona Pictures.”

Alonso views Lazona Pictures and Lazona Cine, its production division, as interconnected entities. By maintaining contacts with sales agents all year round, Alonso can collaborate closely with Lazona Cine during the international marketing of Lazona productions. This strategy aims to foster reciprocal relationships. (EbMaster) quoted Alonso saying this.

Founded in 2023, Lazona Pictures aims to acquire approximately six to eight films annually. This allows ample time for thorough attention and exploration of various audience demographics, as Alonso explained.

I’ll predominantly opt for uplifting dramas and psychological thrillers during my first year, mostly from Europe. These genres can provide a balanced mix of conflict resolution and intrigue, making for an engaging viewing experience.

Alonso will examine movies from the European cinema scene and beyond that have both a distinctive director’s vision (auteurism) and appeal to a wider audience.

“The divide between critically acclaimed films and commercially successful productions is growing larger in the Spanish film market, as well as in others. To bridge this gap, we aim to support movies made by directors who possess a unique perspective while keeping their audience in mind. These films can provide both enjoyable viewing experiences and leave lasting impressions long after the cinema visit,” Alonso explained.

As a movie reviewer, I’ve noticed an exciting trend in recent films that caters specifically to women in urban areas. These movies offer uplifting stories and mature themes that resonate with us. It’s heartening to see such content consistently drawing adult audiences back to the cinemas.

In summary, Alonso expressed the desire for stories that evoke empathy and offer unique perspectives, making the audience feel connected to their own emotions and experiences. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of films that are innovative in their storytelling, tone, or perspective.
