Original Oblivion Dev Reacts To Oblivion Remastered: “Not Sure Remaster Does It Justice”

A seasoned game designer involved in the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has expressed awe at the sheer volume of work invested in the newly launched Oblivion Remastered, going so far as to question if the term “remaster” adequately represents the scale of this project.

During an interview with VideoGamer, Bruce Nesmith, previously employed at Bethesda Game Studios during the creation of Starfield, expressed that he wasn’t aware of the Oblivion Remastered project until it started leaking online. He anticipated that the Oblivion Remastered would resemble something more akin to Skyrim: Special Edition in terms of scope and scale.

Instead, he was surprised by the amount of work done to the 20-year-old game.

Nesmith remarked, “I believed this was just going to be an improvement in textures. I didn’t expect the extensive overhaul they’ve announced – a total revamp of animations, animation systems, moving to Unreal Engine, altering the level progression system, and modifying the user interface. Essentially, they’re reworking every aspect of the game. This degree of remastering is almost unprecedented. Frankly, I think ‘remaster’ might be an understatement for what they’re planning.

In a subsequent discussion, Nesmith referred to Oblivion Remastered as being similar to “Oblivion Version 2.0.” Additionally, he expressed his sense of satisfaction observing such enduring enthusiasm for the game after all these years. For further insights, be sure to read the complete interview.

The launch of Oblivion Remastered coincides with the approaching finish line for the ambitious mod, Skyblivion. This project aims to transfer the original Oblivion game into Skyrim’s engine. Interestingly, Bethesda provided free copies of Oblivion Remastered to the entire Skyblivion team. The leader of the Skyblivion project has declared that having two versions of Oblivion for fans to enjoy in 2025 as a “win-win” scenario.
