Original Mandalorian Season 4 Plans Would’ve Set up This Star Wars Sequel

The new movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu started as a plan for a fourth season of The Mandalorian series. Jon Favreau had already written scripts for it. The director recently explained that this fourth season would have connected to the storyline in Ahsoka Season 2.

Jon Favreau talks original plans for Mandalorian Season 4

Jon Favreau told SFX Magazine that he reworked the scripts originally planned for The Mandalorian Season 4 into a full-length movie script.

The director of Iron Man explained that the existing scripts weren’t ready for a movie. He pointed out there were many characters and the story relied on viewers already being familiar with the ‘Ahsoka’ series, as it set up events for the second season. The focus was on Grand Admiral Thrawn and continuing the broader story within that period of the Star Wars timeline.

He explained that creating the show felt like starting over because it was a different format than what he was used to. He wanted to explore the dynamic between Din Djarin and Grogu as a classic mentor-apprentice relationship—a tough warrior protecting a vulnerable young student. He believes this familiar setup will make the characters relatable even for viewers new to the series. While the show connects to the larger Star Wars story and hints at future events, he emphasized that it also works perfectly well as an independent story.

Season 4 of The Mandalorian was put on hold to make way for a new movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu. This movie, which fans have been eagerly waiting for, is now scheduled to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026. As for Season 2 of Ahsoka, a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
