The disease known as dysentery is making its way to movie theaters! Apple Original Films has announced plans to create “Oregon Trail,” an action-comedy film that will be overseen by EGOT-winning producers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul under their Ampersand banner, with Will Speck and Josh Gordon serving as both directors and producers.

In reference to a well-known video game series that belongs to HarperCollins, the script is set to be penned by The Lucas Bros. and Max Reisman. Caroline Fraser will take on the role of producer for HarperCollins Productions (known for “Carmen Sandiego” and “The Mouse and the Motorcycle”), while Kevin K. Vafi (“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile”) will join as another producer in this venture.

Most recently, Speck and Gordon have directed the live-action musical version of “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” for Sony Pictures. They are also responsible for creating and managing the Hulu/Marvel series “Hit Monkey,” which features Jason Sudeikis and recently launched its second season. Among their other works are “Blades of Glory,” “The Switch,” and “Office Christmas Party.

Pasek and Paul, the duo behind songs and production, have gained significant recognition through their work on “La La Land,” “The Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen.” This year, they secured their first Emmy as songwriters for “Only Murders in the Building,” thereby achieving EGOT status (an accolade given to individuals who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award).

The comedian-writers Keith and Kenny Lucas, recognized as The Lucas Bros. in their professional career, earned an Academy Award nomination for the category of Best Original Screenplay, thanks to their contributions to the movie “Judas and the Black Messiah.

Originally launched in 1974 and gaining popularity in 1985 on the Apple II, “The Oregon Trail” was initially created as an educational computer game aimed at teaching students about the challenges faced by 19th-century pioneers during their westward migration. Over time, this series has led to several spin-offs, with new versions appearing on various platforms such as Apple Arcade in 2021.

Speck and Gordon are managed by CAA (Creative Artists Agency), while Sloane, Offer, Weber, and Dern represent them too. Pasek & Paul have CAA, Kraft-Engel Management, and Schreck, Rose, Dapello, Adams, Berlin & Dunham managing them. The Lucas Bros. are under the management of Avi Gilbert at Fourth Wall Management, UTA (United Talent Agency) and Hansen Jacobson as well. Max Reisman is also managed by Avi Gilbert at Fourth Wall Management, UTA, but additionally by Jackoway Austen. HarperCollins is represented by David Wienir, who heads the Business and Legal Affairs department at HarperCollins Productions.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.
