‘Oregon Trail’ Film in Development at Apple

As a movie reviewer with a penchant for nostalgia and a soft spot for video games that shaped my childhood, I must say I am thoroughly intrigued by Apple Original Films’ upcoming adaptation of “Oregon Trail”. The star-studded team behind this project is nothing short of phenomenal. EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who have graced our screens with musical masterpieces like “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman”, are joining forces with the Oscar-nominated Lucas Bros. The addition of Speck and Gordon, whose comedic brilliance we’ve seen in gems like “Blades of Glory” and the recently premiered second season of “Hit Monkey”, makes this project a true powerhouse.

The disease known as dysentery is making its way onto the big screen! Apple Original Films has officially announced plans to create “Oregon Trail,” an action-comedy movie. This film will be produced by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who have earned EGOT awards, through their Ampersand production company. The movie will also be directed and produced by Will Speck and Josh Gordon.

The script is set to be penned by The Lucas Bros. and Max Reisman, with Caroline Fraser overseeing production for HarperCollins Productions (known for “Carmen Sandiego” and “The Mouse and the Motorcycle”). Additionally, Kevin K. Vafi (“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile”) will contribute as a producer in this project.

Speck and Gordon have just wrapped up directing the live-action musical version of “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” for Sony. They are also in charge of creating and managing the Hulu/Marvel series “Hit Monkey,” which features Jason Sudeikis and recently launched its second season. Some of their other projects include “Blades of Glory,” “The Switch,” and “Office Christmas Party.

Pasek & Paul, renowned composers, have gained significant acclaim for their contributions to movies such as “La La Land,” “The Greatest Showman,” and “Dear Evan Hansen.” This year, they clinched their first Emmy Award in songwriting for “Only Murders in the Building,” thereby achieving EGOT status.

The comedy duo Keith and Kenny Lucas, who go by The Lucas Bros. in their professional life, were recognized with an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay for their contribution to the movie “Judas and the Black Messiah.

Originally launched in 1974, “The Oregon Trail” was initially developed as an instructive computer game to help students understand the conditions of 19th-century westward migration by pioneers. Over time, it has given birth to numerous spin-offs on diverse platforms, one of which came out on Apple Arcade in 2021.

Speck and Gordon are handled by CAA, with Sloane also managing them. Pasek & Paul are represented by three agencies: CAA, Kraft-Engel Management, and Schreck, Rose, Dapello, Adams, Berlin & Dunham. The Lucas Bros. have Avi Gilbert at Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Hansen Jacobson as their representatives. Similarly, Max Reisman is managed by Avi Gilbert at Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Jackoway Austen. HarperCollins has David Wienir, Head of Business and Legal Affairs at HarperCollins Productions, handling their affairs.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.
