As a seasoned anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is a must-watch for any connoisseur of the genre. Studio Madhouse has always been a powerhouse in the industry, and their latest offering is no exception, with its captivating blend of historical sci-fi set against the backdrop of 15th-century Poland.
studio Madhouse is back with an exceptional anime titled “Orb: Dancing on Earth’s Movements” for the Fall 2024 season, and it’s definitely worth your time to watch!
One of the leading animation studios in the field, Madhouse, has gained fame by producing hit anime series such as Frieren, Death Note, and Hunter X Hunter. This time, they’re back with another captivating anime that unfolds a historical science fiction storyline, taking place in 15th-century Poland during its scientific revolution.
Debuting in October 2024, Orb: Journey of Earth spans across 25 episodes. This series is adapted from Uoto’s manga, having won the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2022 and claiming the Best Comic title at the 54th Seiun Awards in 2023.
Given that the manga, consisting of 62 chapters, has finished its narrative, it’s reasonable to expect the anime will too, within a single season. Meanwhile, with hit series like Bleach and Dandadan dominating the current scene, it’s equally important to explore this captivating Seinen series as well.
What is the plot of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth?
In the 15th century, within Poland’s borders, concepts like Earth orbiting the sun challenged the religious teachings. As a result, individuals harboring such unconventional beliefs faced severe punishment, often by being burned alive.
The narrative revolves around Rafal, a gifted child predicted to specialize in the field of theology, which was seen as the most significant subject during that era, focusing on understanding God and religious convictions. However, ever intrigued by astronomy, Rafal encounters Hubert, a learned individual labeled as a heretic.
He helps the man in his studies concerning the “Earth’s motion” hypothesis. In the wake of misfortune, Rafal discovers a spherical trinket and employs it to unravel the truth surrounding the alleged heretical notions.
Why is it worth watching?
Given that it’s a production by Madhouse, it’s no wonder the animation is simply outstanding. While historical settings are common in anime, this one stands out because it presents its story in an unusual manner, which isn’t typically encountered.
Although the anime draws references from historical events such as religious teachings and burning people at stake for opposing their ideas, it’s completely a work of fiction. The gruesome and disturbing scenes highlight the terror of the church and its religious beliefs.
The narrative unfolds around a remarkably intelligent young lad residing in a realm where his life could be forfeited at any moment due to academic inquisitiveness. Rapidly, Rafal transitions from being conceited and insincere into an individual ready to risk everything to uncover the mysteries of the world.
In this world brimming with enigmas, Rafal isn’t alone in his pursuit of the truth. As he journeys onward, he encounters others who have endured hardships due to their yearning for wisdom or those hesitant to gaze even at the heavens out of fear.
