As I reflect upon Tyler Perry’s remarkable journey, I am deeply moved by his resilience, creativity, and unwavering spirit. Born into a world of pain and suffering, he transformed his traumatic experiences into a beacon of hope for millions around the globe. His life story is a testament to the power of healing, forgiveness, and the indomitable human spirit.
On Wednesday evening, Oprah Winfrey, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and Kerry Washington joined other prominent figures in presenting Tyler Perry with a distinguished award known as the Paley Honors Award.
Every autumn, the Paley Center for Media hosts a grand gala in the opulent ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. This year’s event honored a distinguished billionaire media figure for his accomplishments as an actor, author, director, producer, philanthropist, and owner of the expansive Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Notable attendees included Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, and the Duchess, along with a select group of Perry’s friends, colleagues, and peers, such as Nicole Avant (the Honorable), Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, Debra L. Lee, Ari Emanuel, Jon Feltheimer, Debbie Allen, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Cookie Johnson, Tina Knowles, Ebony Obsidian, Tika Sumpter, Diane Warren, Yvette Nicole Brown, and others.
Oprah gracefully started the event as she often does. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be here tonight – and I truly mean it, because I don’t usually go out much, but I’m here tonight because I get to share about my remarkable sibling,” she said. “He stands tall among men, not just in his 6-foot-6 inches, but he is a giant at heart. He has an enormous spirit that is guided by a higher power.
The key to Perry’s significant achievement, as Winfrey pointed out, is his ability to generate art that makes people feel valued and important.
Oprah characterized Perry as a “silent benefactor,” detailing how he transformed a turbulent childhood filled with trauma and mistreatment into a symbol of hope for many, through his charitable actions. One of the altruistic acts that Perry has discreetly undertaken, Oprah disclosed, was his financial aid to the Turpin children, a family from California whose harrowing survival story made headlines across the nation.
Most people often watch the news and respond with sadness, thinking ‘what a pity.’ However, Tyler doesn’t just feel sorry, he asks, ‘What action can I take now to bring about change?’
Perry’s bond with the Duchess deepened when the influential figure provided a sanctuary to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan in his Los Angeles residence during the tumultuous coverage surrounding their exit from the U.K. (It was later disclosed that Perry served as godfather to their second child, daughter Lilibet, in their 2023 Netflix documentary series.) Additionally, the friendship between Perry and Washington has been reinforced by their shared involvement in two professional projects: acting together in the 2010 film “For Colored Girls” and their upcoming collaboration on the movie “The Six Triple Eight.
In her talk, Washington spoke about how Tyler Perry’s faith in her talents influenced her. When he cast her in “For Colored Girls,” Washington’s acting career was at a standstill and she had recently accomplished her long-held dream of performing on Broadway. Feeling uncertain about continuing with acting, she expressed, “‘I believe this is the end for me. I think I’m done with acting, because I couldn’t find a place for myself in this industry.’ Just as she was saying this, Tyler Perry reached out to her.
She went on to say: “Tyler inspired me to aim higher in life, to stretch myself, to believe in possibilities beyond what I had thought before. He introduced me to a community where I could connect with others like me and my role models, and he made me feel that I truly belonged. This shift in mindset significantly impacted the course of my profession.
Washington acknowledged Perry’s high productivity, remarking that he had advised Sarandos during the production of “The Six Triple Eight” about Perry’s work habits being unusual. “I wanted him to be cautious,” Washington joked. “I know that examining these call sheets, it may seem like anyone can make a movie in the time and with the budget that Tyler does, as swiftly and effectively as he does. But there’s only one Tyler – you can’t expect the same from other directors.
Sarandos and Avant concluded the night’s presentations, sharing insights from their journey in creating the war-time drama. Notably, it was Avant who produced the movie, ultimately recruiting Perry to direct the production.
Tyler is a consistent companion who’s always present,” Avant stated. “He’s consistently there for his friends, in his personal life, and in his work. Over the course of an exceptional career, Tyler hasn’t just shown up, but he’s also carved out his unique path and a place at the table for himself. And from that position, he has significantly impacted our culture.
Sarandos remarked, “He leaves nothing unattended in his craftsmanship. Witnessing it is astounding. To be near it is a privilege, and to collaborate on it is an honor.
When Avant and Sarandos invited Perry to come up on stage to receive his crystal trophy, the filmmaker was lifted by a prolonged applause from the affluent audience and, once more, seemed noticeably touched. Upon reaching the microphone, Perry explained why the event held a special significance – December 8 is the 15-year anniversary of the passing of his cherished mother, Maxine Perry.
During this season, he finds it incredibly challenging, fighting back tears. Normally, he avoids making plans – secluding himself, praying, connecting with his faith, and spending time alone to mourn, as he’s unsure of how his grief will manifest. However, due to the timing of “The Six Triple Eight’s” release, he’s been more active this year. After a significant breakthrough in therapy, Perry is now determined to be fully engaged during such nights and shared: “Part of that was realizing, ‘How can I let myself be honored?’
During a deeply emotional and open-hearted 10-minute address, Perry recounted some harrowing instances of abuse he faced in his childhood – such as witnessing his father brutally attack his mother when she attempted to escape with him and his siblings; the individuals who preyed on him sexually as a child; being subjected to police stops due to being “Black and large”; and a particularly cruel teacher who cruelly killed Perry’s beloved hamster, disguising it as part of a science experiment.
Perry expressed his joy at being here today, noting how even a young boy without the resources he had might have achieved what he did. He believes this achievement alone is worthy of celebration. Despite the hardships he faced, the wrongdoers didn’t manage to take away his compassion. At 55, Perry feels freer than ever before, having confronted his pain, opening his arms to embrace it, and using it to heal. He encourages everyone to do the same.
The recollection of the story regarding the ill science teacher, which Perry unearthed lately, also brought with it a distressing thought: on the day he walked home from school, nobody inquired about the reason behind the absence of the hamster in its cage.
He expressed gratitude to those present who had supported him, saying, “Everyone here who came today, I want to thank you.” Wrapping up his sincere speech, he added, “Today symbolizes you standing by me, questioning, ‘Why isn’t your life more fulfilled?’
As a movie critic, I find myself marveling at the impressive collection of accolades adorning the trophy case of filmmaker extraordinaire, Tyler Perry. Among these esteemed awards are the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, bestowed upon him at the 2021 Oscars, and the Governors Award from the 2020 Emmys. To add to this already impressive resume, he holds a multiyear first-look deal with Netflix and a four-picture film deal with Amazon. The latter even went as far as producing an all-encompassing documentary about his life, “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story,” released in 2023.
Maureen J. Reidy, president & CEO of The Paley Center for Media, expressed that through his extensive and highly praised collection of work, Tyler Perry has undeniably earned a prominent position among the most influential figures in media. As he embarks on new projects, he consistently pushes our industry and culture forward. We are thrilled to bestow upon him our highest accolade.
The host committee for the Paley Honors tribute gala featured Ari Emanuel, Jon Feltheimer, Whoopi Goldberg, Taraji P. Henson, Matt Johnson, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Gayle King, Debra L. Lee, Mellody Hobson, George Lucas, Scott Mills, Avant, Sarandos and Washington. In simpler terms, a number of well-known individuals served on the organizing committee for the Paley Honors tribute gala event.
