As a lifelong cinema enthusiast with a deep appreciation for powerful storytelling and resilient characters, Oprah Winfrey‘s speech at the Democratic National Convention left me profoundly moved and hopeful. Her eloquent words echoed the sentiments of many who yearn for unity, compassion, and a return to our nation’s core values.
Oprah Winfrey made an unexpected appearance during the third night of the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago this week. She delivered a passionate speech that emphasized the distinct qualities of Kamala Harris compared to her Republican opponent.
During this divisive political season, Oprah Winfrey, who’s been relatively quiet on the political front thus far, encouraged her audience and Democrats gathered at the United Center in Chicago to maintain their trust in “the finest aspects of our nation” as a means of helping us navigate through this tough period of polarization.
Similar to many others, Oprah Winfrey voiced concerns about the ideology advanced by former President Donald Trump and extreme-right groups. She cautioned against those who claim that books are perilous but guns are secure, and that there’s an acceptable way to venerate and a forbidden way to express love.
In my humble opinion, while Winfrey didn’t explicitly mention a specific figure, the message was crystal clear. Be wary of those in power who aim to sow discord first and then assert control. As she eloquently put it, “When we unite, they cannot conquer us.”
Oprah referenced Tessie Prevost, a school integration activist from New Orleans in the 1950s, who braved sniper threats, as an example of perseverance. She highlighted the efforts of pioneers like Prevost, who recently passed away at 69 years old. In doing so, Oprah encouraged Americans to aim for more unity and solidarity.
“She stated that America is a continuous endeavor, demanding dedication and a readiness for both the physical labor and emotional investment of democratic values. Occasionally, it necessitates taking a firm stance against life’s adversaries.”
Oprah Winfrey also brought up the controversy surrounding JD Vance, Trump’s vice presidential running mate, who has received criticism for his past comments about “childless cat ladies” influencing politics. Referring to a situation where neighbors don’t inquire about each other’s political views when they come together to help put out a house fire, Winfrey made a poignant remark. “Even if the house in question belongs to a childless cat lady – we make sure to rescue that cat as well.”
As a movie-goer scrutinizing the political landscape, I’ve always considered myself an impartial voter. Recently, a comment from candidate Trump to his evangelical supporters caught my attention: he suggested that if they voted for him just one more time, they wouldn’t have to vote again.
“She declared herself as an independent voter who takes great pride in repeatedly casting her ballot, being a devoted American. She believes that values and character are paramount in both leadership and daily life. In the upcoming elections of 2024, decency and respect will be up for grabs.”
Oprah, much like others who spoke, raised doubts about the extent to which the Republican Party has been overtaken by Trump and his Make America Great Again (MAGA) ideology.
“As citizens of the United States, let’s prioritize our allegiance to the Constitution above any one person. We should opt for unity rather than revenge, and practicality over irrationality. This is what truly embodies the spirit of America.”
Oprah echoed a recurring message heard throughout the week: “We’re not going to be pushed back, forced back, intimidated back – we’re not retreating,” she declared.
Oprah ignited the crowd with her first remark, “Who says you can’t return home?” This was a reference to her extensive time in Chicago during the 1980s to 2000s, where she hosted her daily talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
