As a seasoned movie reviewer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the recent controversy surrounding Oprah Winfrey‘s involvement in the “Unite for America” livestream rally has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The sheer audacity of people suggesting that the billionaire philanthropist would demand payment to endorse a candidate is laughable, to say the least.
Contrary to rumors and assumptions suggesting Oprah Winfrey was personally compensated from Kamala Harris’s campaign for taking part in the “Unite for America” livestream rally, it has been verified once more that the $1 million spent by the campaign actually covered Harpo Productions’ production costs.
Harpo requested the necessary funds for pre-production, filming in the field, logistics, and post-production expenses. On September 19th, a grand event took place, which included a conversation between Winfrey and Harris, along with virtual appearances by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, and Julia Roberts.
In response to an Instagram post on The Shade Room showcasing a video of Oprah Winfrey being confronted by a TMZ cameraman (with Winfrey denying receiving personal payment from the campaign), comments suggested it was irrational to believe that the wealthy Oprah would require $1 million to support a candidate. One supporter wrote, “It’s hard for me to fathom that Oprah’s endorsement can be bought.
Oprah herself chimed in the comments section: “I’m incredibly grateful for your kind words! If we were together, I’d certainly give you a high-five and a warm hug. Normally, I avoid addressing rumors, but I’ve come to understand that if unchecked, falsehoods only grow larger.
I didn’t receive any payment, but instead contributed my time, effort, and resources to the campaign. For the live-streaming event in September, my company, Harpo, was requested to provide set design, lighting, cameras, microphones, crew, producers, and all other essential equipment (even the chairs we sat on) to create a live production. I didn’t ask for any personal compensation. However, everyone who worked on that project was fairly compensated. That’s it.
A supporter within Harris’ team confirmed this, explaining that no one received payment, but according to campaign regulations, expenses related to appearances such as production costs, travel, and crew fees must be covered. The $1 million from the Harris for President fund was essentially used to fulfill campaign finance duties, with the term “event production” explicitly mentioned in its detailed breakdown.
In normal terms, it’s worth noting that the $1 million fee isn’t unusual. According to campaign records, The Harris Victory Fund splurged around $1.15 million on their fundraiser at Madison Square Garden back in March. Similarly, they spent approximately $480,000 to hire the Peacock Theater for a comparable event in June.
The initiative covered all expenses associated with ‘Unite for America,’ a live broadcast event held on September 19 near Detroit, Michigan. At no time was Oprah Winfrey personally compensated during this campaign, nor did she receive any payment from Harpo.
