OpenAI’s web browser is finally here, but you’ll need a Mac to try it

Four months after initial rumors, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new tool designed to compete with Google’s offerings. Currently, it’s only accessible to users with MacOS devices.

In July 2025, Reuters reported that OpenAI was developing an AI browser with the goal of completely reshaping the online browsing experience.

Originally, people expected the new browser to be available within weeks, but Sam Altman and his team waited over three months before officially launching ChatGPT Atlas on October 21st.

Right now, the tool is only available for Mac users. People with Windows or mobile devices will need to be patient while OpenAI gathers feedback from those trying it out initially.

OpenAI finally releases ChatGPT Atlas, but Windows will have to wait

OpenAI recently explained Atlas, a new feature where its AI can answer questions about any webpage you’re viewing. It appears as a sidebar on the right side of your screen.

ChatGPT can now offer helpful suggestions as you type in your browser, and it can even open, close, or reopen web tabs for you, making browsing a little easier.

Agent Mode lets the AI handle tasks for you, like booking flights, making purchases, or setting up meetings. Like the regular ChatGPT, it also remembers your browsing history and what you like to give you a more personalized experience.

Atlas’s agent mode helps you get things done more quickly while you’re online. It’s currently being tested with users on our Plus, Pro, and Business plans.

Users have control over how much information Atlas retains about their activity. Also, access to Agent Mode is currently limited to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus or Pro.

Good news for those of us not on Macs! OpenAI just announced that Atlas, their new app, is heading to Windows, iOS, and Android soon. They haven’t given us a specific date yet, but it’s definitely on the way for us mobile and Windows gamers.

Besides Atlas, OpenAI is also moving into building its own hardware. They’re investing $6.5 billion in a startup founded by a former Apple design leader, potentially leading to computers powered by ChatGPT becoming available soon.

Following Spotify’s recent announcement of ChatGPT integration – allowing users to build playlists, find new music, and explore podcasts directly within the AI chatbot – comes further news about the feature’s capabilities.
