OpenAI wins $200 million US defense contract

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has secured a $200 million deal with the U.S. Department of Defense to collaborate on creating advanced Artificial Intelligence technologies for the nation.

On June 16, Monday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced a set of fresh agreements intended for the Air Force, Navy, Army, and additional entities.

I’m thrilled to share that I’m part of a community where the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office has bestowed a $200 million contract upon OpenAI, the innovators behind ChatGPT. This collaboration aims to create cutting-edge AI prototypes, particularly for tackling pressing national security issues in both warfare and commercial sectors. These “frontier AI capabilities” will be instrumental in addressing critical challenges we face as a nation.

The project should be completed by July 2026, as OpenAI elaborated on their strategies more in a blog post they wrote themselves.

OpenAI launches ‘OpenAI for government’ program

Today marks the beginning of OpenAI for Government, an innovative undertaking designed to make our cutting-edge AI technologies accessible to government officials nationwide, announced the company.

We aim to develop AI technologies that empower government employees, enabling them to streamline processes, reduce bureaucracy, and focus primarily on their main mission – serving the American public effectively.

Via the contract granted by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), OpenAI aims to “remodel its internal processes” by enhancing healthcare services for military personnel and their families, as well as implementing “forward-looking cyber protection.

The creators of ChatGPT have emphasized that all actions taken by their employees should align with the current usage policies and directives established within the company.

Since its initial launch in November 2022, OpenAI has consistently been refining and expanding ChatGPT’s models by exploring multiple approaches. Regularly, it provides opportunities for people to witness these advancements online.

In May, the o3 model of ChatGPT made its debut on Twitch, streaming an uninterrupted playthrough of the timeless Game Boy title, Pokemon Red, completely automated.
