According to CEO Sam Altman (who you may remember from every AI headline ever), building cutting-edge AI requires “hundreds of billions of dollars and may eventually require trillions.” No pressure, just the GDP of a medium-sized European nation. But don’t worry—nonprofit or not, OpenAI still plans to pass the hat at Silicon Valley’s next bake sale.
In 2024, OpenAI did briefly flirt with becoming “for-profit” to soak up capital for all those AI supercomputers. It was a brief phase. Like when you try bangs and realize, wow, that was a mistake.
Controversial Plans
Rewind for a moment: OpenAI’s nonprofit launch in 2015 had all the idealism of a TED Talk, with a for-profit arm showing up in 2019 to help reel in cash. (Spoiler: It never left the family business, like a mom-n-pop shop where mom brought in venture capital.)
Then came the Musk drama. Yes, Elon Musk, co-founder and walking headline machine, sued Altman, accusing him of sneakier plot twists than “Game of Thrones” and alleging OpenAI’s nonprofit act was actually a masterclass in “Gotcha!” Musk, conveniently, has since launched his own AI chatbot, Grok. If you’re keeping score at home—Grok is either the Hero or the Sidekick, depending on whether you buy your flamethrowers from Tesla.
Revenue projections? Think “Shark Tank” with killer robots. Bloomberg says OpenAI expects to hit $29.4 billion by 2026, starting with a neat $12.7 billion in 2025. According to March reports, OpenAI even bagged a $40 billion funding round from Softbank at a $300 billion valuation, because apparently money really does grow on algorithmic trees now.
So, after all the plot twists, the lawsuits, and the Silicon Valley bake sales, OpenAI’s message is clear: “We’re a nonprofit! (But with a billionaire’s checking account.)” Stay tuned for the next episode.
