Space simulators aren’t very common, and even rarer are those that offer engaging, story-focused single-player experiences. Because of this, many enthusiastic fans take it upon themselves to create their own space games, often as mods or completely free, standalone titles. Open Galaxy is one such free game, and it’s just received a significant update, which is why we’re highlighting it now.
I’m really excited about Open Galaxy – it’s a passion project that’s clearly built on the classic Star Wars space sims like TIE Fighter and X-Wing. The developers aren’t even trying to hide the inspiration! It’s actually set in that same universe, and you’ll recognize all the ships and factions. It feels like playing those old favorites, but with a fresh take.
Despite being created by fans as a free project, this game is remarkably well-made. It boasts smooth gameplay, high-quality graphics, and a ton of content – over 400 ships and dozens of missions. Plus, the controls are sophisticated and work great with both a mouse and keyboard, or a controller.

The latest version of the game is marked 11.2.24 and brings many new features:
- Most importantly, the update introduces a new campaign, Strike at Sullust, consisting of six missions and four cutscenes.
- The previous campaign, A New Ally, has also been refreshed.
- Several ships have finally received their missing cockpits.
- Graphics have been improved (among other things, planets now have atmospheres and their own skyboxes during low-altitude flights).
- Various bug fixes have also been introduced
