As a seasoned gamer of comic book movies with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say, 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride that left me yearning for a smoother trajectory. The year started off on a sour note, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania being the straw that broke the camel’s back, setting the stage for an unremarkable Marvel lineup. DC didn’t fare much better, with Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 failing to make a lasting impression.
2024 hasn’t been a great year for comic book movie enthusiasts. Out of the six films based on comics that hit the big screen this year, only one has managed to score more than 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Looking back on last year, it seems like 2023 wasn’t exactly a shining star for Marvel and DC in terms of their movie releases – aside from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which were absolute standouts among the best offerings from these universes. The rest, unfortunately, didn’t quite live up to my expectations.
The journey began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which marked a subpar beginning for Marvel, setting the stage for The Marvels in November, while avoiding any discussions about Secret Invasion. On the other side of the competition, we find Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle (the newcomer), and Aquaman 2.
2024 saw a disappointing trend in the world of superhero movies, with many falling short of greatness and leaning more towards poor quality or lackluster. However, there was one notable exception.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the only ‘Fresh’ 2024 superhero movie
In a stunning victory, Deadpool and Wolverine’s film has garnered an impressive 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a remarkable 94% audience verification rating, making it the undisputed top superhero movie of 2024. Let’s take a look at how other cinematic releases compare:
- Madame Web – 11%
- The Crow – 23%
- Hellboy: The Crooked Man – 41%
- Joker: Folie à Deux – 32%
- Venom: The Last Dance – 37%
As a dedicated fan, I found myself reflecting on Venom 3, hitting theaters tomorrow (October 25). This series, with its contentious history, has always been an intricate dance. Despite its conclusion, it’s challenging to determine whether the journey was truly worthwhile.
This year, only one more film is set to be released within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe without Spider-Man himself – it’s Kraven the Hunter. Initial feedback from New York Comic Con has been favorable, with attendees praising the opening 10 minutes as “realistic” and “intense.
However, the franchise has produced five movies, and all of them have earned Rotten scores:
- Venom – 30%
- Venom: Let There Be Carnage – 57%
- Morbius – 15%
- Madame Web – 11%
- Venom: The Last Dance – 37%
The outlook isn’t promising for Kraven, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the main character, the big-game hunter and villain. It’s set to hit theaters on December 13, so we’ll find out soon enough if it can perform a remarkable feat.
It’s great news that 2025 is shaping up with some major releases: Captain America in a new world, the Thunderbolts team-up, Superman, and Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the Fantastic Four.
