Only a Genius Can Outsmart This Oblivion Quest Inspired by Agatha Christie

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is widely recognized as one of the greatest games ever, much of its acclaim stemming from its exceptional delivery of the open-world RPG genre. However, before Skyrim was released, players were introduced to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, where they encountered some of Bethesda’s finest quest designs.

Among the most memorable questlines in video game history, the Dark Brotherhood’s Whodunit? stands out as a highlight. This intriguing murder mystery unfolds within the confined walls of Summitmist Manor in Skingrad and draws inspiration from Agatha Christie’s novel, And Then There Were None. The quest masterfully delivers on its intended mystery, providing players with a challenging yet engaging experience. Here are some key points to help you navigate through the case.

Whodunit? is one of the best quests in The Elder Scrolls’ history

To start the “Whodunit?”, you’ll need to follow the Dark Brotherhood questline first. You receive the task from Ocheeva once you’ve completed “The Lonely Wanderer” and “Bad Medicine”. Later, you’ll be invited to Summitmist Manor in Skingrad, under the guise of a guest at an ordinary social event. However, things take a turn for the unusual there.

TES Memory: Mystery Mansion Treasure Hunt: Six individuals gather in a mansion with the ruse of searching for hidden wealth, yet unbeknownst to them, one is a professional killer tasked with taking out the others. Here’s the catch – you are the hired gun.

At the manor, upon arrival, you find yourself and five unknowing guests confined, each marked for demise. However, the game has an unexpected turn. The title of this ordeal may lead you to believe it’s about solving a murder mystery. But instead, your task is to eliminate each guest without arousing suspicion.

The Ensemble of (Upcoming) Deceased Individuals boasts a vibrant array of personalities. Dovesi Dran, a charismatic Dunmer, often displays flirtatious tendencies. Matilde Petit, a curious Breton matron, is known for her meddling nature. Neville represents the opulence of the Empire, while Primo Antonius, a retired soldier, brings a military background to the table. Nels the Naughty, a drunken Nord, adds an element of unpredictability to the group. Each character possesses unique idiosyncrasies, prejudices, and grudges that can be advantageously manipulated. What’s more, you have the freedom to utilize these traits in any manner or sequence you deem fit.

Best questline EVER presented to us in any TES game out there. Loved this one!

This is SUCH a good quest. I remember saving before going in and replaying it like 4 times.

In the mystery game Whodunit?, the attendees aren’t mere victims. They actively respond to occurrences and deaths. The sequence of murders and player interactions influence who survives, causing them to suspect one another. At times, they might even become killers themselves. For example, if only three characters remain, Dovesi could lose control and attack Matilde or Primo, convinced she’s protecting herself from the actual culprit.

This is the peak of Bethesda’s storytelling

Playing Whodunit? is akin to unraveling an actual mystery box. Every decision you make carries significant weight – who to eliminate first, what words to use with whom, and which path to take within the manor. It’s all crucial, so remember to save your progress before entering the manor or making any major decisions while inside.

In “Oblivion Remastered,” this particular quest is unique due to its tone and structure. It’s filled with dark humor and suspense, which can be discovered if you look closely. Interestingly, when you first arrive, you have the option to declare yourself an assassin, but the other guests merely see you as a joker instead.

Unlike many murder mysteries, Whodunit? shifts focus from determining who perpetrated the crime, instead posing the question of how one might pull off the deed without getting caught. This intriguing quest is among Oblivion Remastered’s top offerings, and we are deeply appreciative that Bethesda remastered the game as it allows us to savor the experience once more.
