A live-action version of the popular anime series Samurai Champloo is being made, continuing the trend of anime being adapted into Hollywood movies and shows.
Variety reports that Tomorrow Studios, known for producing Netflix’s live-action One Piece, is now developing a live-action version of Samurai Champloo. They’re collaborating with the anime’s original creator, Shinichiro Watanabe, on the project.
Samurai Champloo, which debuted in 2004, rapidly gained popularity with anime viewers because of its distinctive mix of traditional samurai action and modern hip hop music.
The tale centers on three very different people journeying across Japan: Mugen, a wild and unpredictable swordsman; Jin, a calm and collected ronin; and Fuu, a young woman looking for a unique samurai – one who carries the scent of sunflowers.
Samurai Champloo to get the live-action treatment
Becky Clements from Tomorrow Studios shared that they consulted with the creator of Samurai Champloo during a trip to Japan.
According to Variety, Clements said they told Watanabe during a dinner in Japan that they hoped he would join the creative team if they decided to move ahead with ‘Samurai Champloo.’ They were very happy he agreed.

I’m really excited to hear Tomorrow Studios is tackling another big anime! They already proved they can pull it off with Netflix’s One Piece last year – that show was HUGE and everyone loved it. So, I have high hopes for this new adaptation!
The show’s second series, launched on March 10th, is still very popular, currently boasting a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Okay, so we don’t know anything about who’s going to be in it, when it’ll come out, or where we’ll be able to watch it yet, but as a huge fan of the original, I’m really hoping the series does it justice! I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s as good as I know it can be.
