One Piece Gear 5 debut director breaks silence on Fish-Man Island remake

As a die-hard One Piece fan who has watched every single episode (and yes, I have the scars to prove it from staying up all night during marathon sessions), hearing that Nagamine, the director of my beloved Gear 5 episode 1071, will be personally working on the first three episodes of the Fish-Man Island remaster has me absolutely buzzing! The thought of seeing those iconic moments reimagined with improved animation and a remastered soundtrack is enough to make me forget the countless hours I’ve spent debating the finer points of Devil Fruit consumption laws.

The animated adaptation of One Piece is gearing up for a revamped rendition of the Fish-Man Island Arc, and this is the statement from the director regarding episode 1071 (which introduced Gear 5), as we approach its release.

During a brief pause in the Egghead Island storyline, Toei has planned to engage fans by revisiting the Fish-Man Island Saga. Originally spanning over 58 episodes, it will now be condensed into just 21, featuring updated animation and a freshly remastered soundtrack.

After being apart for two years, the Straw Hat Pirates will reunite and embark on their voyage towards the New World. But before they can reach their destination, they’ll need to traverse Fish-Man Island, situated deep beneath the ocean surface. This leg of their adventure promises fresh excitement as the crew presses forward on their quest.

Director Nagamine of Gear 5 has announced his personal involvement in crafting the initial trio of episodes for the remastered version of Fish-Man Islands! That’s right, we can expect these episodes to truly shine!

As a passionate 3D animation student, I was fortunate enough to attend the One Piece Masterclass arranged by Toei at their pop-up shop in France. The majority of the questions were posed by one of the organizers, and following this, we had a brief opportunity for a Q&A session. All responses were translated live by a Toei interpreter throughout the event.

“Next, we present the responses from the directors, Isaac Voyneau, based on our meeting notes and video recordings. Our special guests for this occasion are Tatsuya Nagamine and Kenji Yokoyama.

The thread includes several answers by the two animators. Nagamine is best known for directing Episode 1071, which marked the debut of Luffy’s iconic Gear 5 transformation.

As reported by the translator, Nagamine stated, “He was planning to bring up the topic of the Fish-Men; they’re currently working on an updated version. Moreover, he couldn’t help but feel touched by the joy radiating here, so he felt compelled to lighten up rather than remaining serious due to his emotional overload.

“I’m in charge of Episodes 1, 2, and 3. Each night, you’ll find me on Adobe After Effects, meticulously adding minute details, arranging compositions, softening or sharpening visual elements, and carefully placing precise touches. Sometimes I question why I’m doing this, but my aim is to make it flawless! I even worked until 6 am before catching my flight to France, still tweaking small details.
