One Piece fans get serious about treasure hunt with $96,000-per-day plan

People are already speculating about how to find the One Piece, and even estimating the potential costs involved in the search.

Okay, so March 3rd, 2026 was insane for One Piece fans like me. After almost 30 years of following the story, Oda finally wrote down what the One Piece is – the big secret everyone’s been waiting for! He literally put it in a chest and tossed it into the ocean, which is just… wow. It felt like a real moment in the story itself!

The excitement around this event has reminded many fans of the beginning of a legendary age of piracy. People quickly started speculating about where the hidden ‘treasure’ could be, and popular streamer iShowSpeed even hinted he’ll be broadcasting his own search for it.

So, what’s involved in recovering something from around 600 meters under the sea? An account on X (formerly Twitter), called OPHunterTV, has outlined a detailed plan and calculations.

Fans estimate the cost to retrieve the One Piece’s secret in real life

According to a recent post, it’s estimated that finding the One Piece would cost about ¥15,000,000 per day, which is approximately $96,000 in US dollars.

This cost estimate includes the rental fees for a research vessel from Japan’s Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, as well as the Shinkai 6500 submersible.

The cost also includes support for the crew and other expenses needed for the operation. They explained the estimate by pointing out that the submersible can’t be rented on its own – it has to be chartered along with a launch and support vessel from JAMSTEC.

We investigated the possibility of recovering the “One Piece” from a depth of about 650 meters in Sagami Bay. This wouldn’t be a typical dive; it would require a method similar to diving techniques used during the Pirate Era, but far more advanced than anything previously considered. Our plan involves using JAMSTEC’s research vessel and the Shinkai 6500 submersible…

Based on the cost analysis, operating the ship and the Shinkai 6500 submersible costs about ¥11,269,000 per day, which is approximately $75,000 USD.

Additionally, operating the submersible costs approximately ¥1,952,000 daily, which is about $13,000 in US dollars.

The project will also need a team of five specialists for support, and each person is expected to cost about ¥35,321 (approximately $235 USD), depending on their specific job.

As a fan, I’ve been digging into the details, and it turns out the price isn’t quite as straightforward as it seems. On top of the base cost, there are extra fees for things like fuel, docking the ship, insurance, and support staff. Plus, if they need to go off the usual routes or use special equipment, that adds to the bill, not to mention taxes! When you add everything up, the whole trip is looking like it’ll cost around ¥15 million.

Each of these operations typically costs tens of millions of yen. However, if there’s something significant 650 meters under Sagami Bay, we believe it’s within reach and we’re prepared to investigate!

The One Piece Hunter is run by a dedicated group of fans who are determined to be the first to discover the treasure, using any means necessary.

They recently reached out to Japan’s marine research agency through their website and are currently awaiting a response.
