One Of The Best Nintendo 64 Platformers Is Coming To Nintendo Switch Online

This month, Nintendo is adding two classic Nintendo 64 games to its library of retro titles. Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble, both originally made by Ubisoft, will be available to play on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack starting December 17th.

Rayman 2 first came out in 1999 for Nintendo 64 and PC, and was later released on Dreamcast, PlayStation, and other consoles. It was Ubisoft’s first attempt at a 3D Rayman game, and reviewers loved it, comparing it favorably to popular titles like Crash Bandicoot, Banjo-Kazooie, and Super Mario 64.

Tonic Trouble is another game created by Ubisoft, but it’s not as well-known as Rayman 2. It was designed by Michel Ancel, who also created Rayman, and features an action-packed adventure set on a strangely mutated Earth, filled with bright and unusual characters.

In 2000, TopMob gave Rayman 2: The Great Escape a fantastic 9.3 out of 10, praising its funny story, great gameplay, and overall quality. However, their 1999 review of Tonic Trouble was much less positive, scoring it a 3 out of 10 and suggesting it would likely be overshadowed by Rayman 2.

Even if you’re not excited about the new Ubisoft games, the inclusion of Rayman 2 suggests that some classic Nintendo games might be added to the service soon. Back in July, fans noticed hints in a Nintendo video that pointed to five unannounced games being added to the Nintendo Classics collection.

Since then, two of those five games – Rayman 2 and Forsaken 64 – have been added to Nintendo Switch Online. Glover, Donkey Kong 64, and the original Super Smash Bros. are still missing, and fans have been eagerly awaiting them. The arrival of Rayman 2 is a positive sign that these popular titles might be added to the service soon.
